Default Bernise Mountain Dog in hot climate

Hello,

We live in Cancun mexico and are under the impresion that its too hot here to have our favorite type of dog, the Bermise mt dog. But recently we have seen a few around and were wondering if it is possible. We have 7 months of amazing weather.....low of 50 and hight of 75 and then there is summer.....we get up to 95 but the humidity is awful. During this time can we groome these dogs to make it more comfortable?

Any comments welcomed.

Hi Enrique. Check out this link. It may help. They are beautiful dogs.

tahlee, great info. When I was a young chld living in Pennsylvania, our neighbor had a Bernese. At that time, most homes did not have air conditioning. The dog died from the heat.
Enrique, you may want to contact a breeder, and voice your concerns. A good breeder will be honest with you. At least you are doing your homework first, before deciding on a dog that may or may not be right for your climate. Enjoy the Forum!

Welcome Enrique! Well can't help you apart from you have seen a few of them where you live (so it must be possible!) My suggestion is get to know a few of the owners and say you are thinking of getting one of these dogs and ask them how do they fit into this climate and ask them for tips/advice etc Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Thanks everyone! I do want to be a responsible owner and do my homework. I think that we can make it work. During the hot summer months, we spend most of our days indoors with the ac on. Our pets do the same..... Also, a bit of grooming might help.

Again thanks for the posts....

From all I've ever heard and read, DO NOT even think about shaving a double coated dog like a Bernese!

For starters, it could ruin their coat forever.

More importantly, their double coat acts like insulation both traditionally from the cold, but also, and more importantly for you, from the heat.

Removing their insulation leaves them very vulnerable to heat stroke even in more moderate climates.
