Talking New here and doing an intro :)

my dog / grandson is obi. We adopted him from an animal shelter in january.. so i am guessing he is about 11 months old. He is rotten to the core. i was told he is jack russell mixed but the more i look around ..i think he is parson russell mixed. the parson russell is bigger. obi probably weighs around 50 lbs now. we could not have asked for a smarter dog. He was instantly house trained. He took to it immediately. He loves to play with his toys... but he is scared of thunder ... when it storms , he hides under the end tables or in his kennel. Rain is ok, as long as there is no thunder.
nice to meet ya'll... glad i found this site
always,
mona

Hi obi Nice to meet you and welcome aboard to Df Iam a little confused when you say he is rotten to the core. Can you explain please as you say he is a smart dog but hates thunder a lot of dogs do and fireworks also cause huge problems too! Any way there are several ways to try and stop this fear. there isn't a particular one that works for every dog either so it's process of elimination I am afraid. One is tablets Skull cap and Valerian it's a sedative and won't make them drowsy and you give 1 tablet per 5kg weight of the dog 30 mins before a storm/fireworks!

2. Counter conditioning using a cd the idea behind this is it's done in your house and you srart off low volume and see if there is a reaction in your dog if not leave the volume as it is and get some one (with the remote ready) and you start playing with your dog ( make it really fun and silly) with balls or tuggers or what ever he like playing with then get
the person with the remote to turn the volume slightly and I mean slightly you how ever must continue playing again no reaction after a few more mins a bit more volume and still carry on playing. What Iam getting at is dogs use a association tecnique so even though the thunder he hates if you can make it fun etc he will over a period of time associate thunder=fun ok! So you get to the point where there is a reaction and he stops playing then turn the volume down just a little and resume play etc it's a little long winded but does help some dogs.

3. Get hold of thunder shirt the idea is when its on them it gently hugs them and give them a reasuring feel too which should greatly reduce any stress How you introduce it to your dog is to put it on the floor and put some of his favourite treats/kibble and let him eat off it he will through association see this as a fun thing that's not going to stress him out! And some places will offer a money
back warranty if it doesn't work!! So Good luck with your choice and let us know how you get on And enjoy the forum!
