Welcome to the forum. Lots of knowlegeable people here who can help you. I got in the habit of not letting my dog outside unless I'm with him. That way I can monitor his behavior. I didn't know his history, but he had been rehomed a lot and needed a lot of monitoring.

Welcome Doglova! My dog Lucy does the same thing, eat dirt. Have never figured out why either.
Just seems to make her poop a different color. We told the vet and they seemed unconcerned too.

Hi Doglova and welcome aboard to Df May I suggest as she ( what's her name?) May I suggest as 1. She is a quick learner and 2. She is still young! To start straight away a solid 'Leave it'/Don't touch along with redirection tecniques and to start with in the house put some very tasty treats down on the floor and get her to leave it by using the word 'Leave it' if she doesn't (which she
won't do straight away) Redirect her be calling her to you and when she comes to you get her sit ( this is a very basic command and she should know this by 5 months!) when she has sat give a a very high value treat such as a hotdog this will help the association process of good things and praise lots of it with petting when you have got that down to a 'T' then get her sit again and put some treats on the floor but get her attention so she has eye contact with you and say 'Leave it' as soon she
has left it again call her to you and treat and praise, praise, praise again!!!
Associations will kick in once this 100% ok in the house clear the garden of snails ( they aren't good for dogs one bit ) again get her to sit and wait put a handfull of treats down in one area then let her explore when she gets close to the treat issue a 'Leave it' command ( timing is important on this) but it's 100% safe using treats on the floor and if a few mistakes happen it's ok as the treats can't do any damage. But it's going to take time and patience ( it won't happen overnight either!) I would suggest daily 10-15 min sessions be consistant and repetisous as these are the keys to success. Or if you want your dog tethered to you you can do this but your dog will always have this problem which I am sure you would rather fix the problem rather than mask it A lot of owners don't bother what they dogs get in to ( I have seen on at my local dog park ) Glad you are concerned Good luck and let us know how you get on!!!!!

Either way I wouldn't want my dog eating snails Dirt is one thing but there again there can be stones in dirt and a puppy doesn't want to swallowing stones!
