Default Heyyyyy

I'm now the proud owner of an 8 week old Lab/Collie mix!

I have had many dogs. But this is my first true puppy. I had worked around animals for a long time. How it all changes when you have your own little guy.

He is doing very well so far with potty training. Granted his feeding schedule is very strict, and I wake up every 3-4 hours at night to take him out and he goes everywhere with me. He has had an accident here and there. But overall I'm very impressed.

He has learned to sit on command already too. I got lucky to say the least!!

This is my first time ever owning a dog like this. Any pointers? He goes in next week to get his first set of shots. However he is itching a little bit. I've checked him for fleas, but he is a black dog. So I could be missing some. Putting any chemicals on him until he goes to the vet really makes me nervous because he is so young. And his skin is very dry and he has a lot of dandruff. If I were to use Dawn dish soap, could I use a small amount of tea tree conditioner to help relieve some of the dryness? Someone also said Head and Shoulders works to kill fleas, but this again is a "medicated" shampoo. Is it safe for an 8 week old puppy?

What would you do?

NeonGrape, welcome to the forum! I'd love to see you post a picture of your new puppy. What is his name? At 8 weeks, I'd wait and let the vet recommend what is best. You may want to buy a 99 cent plastic flea comb at the pet store. If any black specks come out, then he probably has fleas. Welcome again! We have a ton of really nice people on this Forum.

Just some more information for all the helpful advise possible. I'm becoming obsessive with this dogs care and well being lol.

The previous owners had him on "Ol' Roy." I switched him to Natural Choice L/B puppy. He seems to like it, however pukes up any type of wet food. Is the wet food necessary? I really never was big on giving my dogs or cats wet food often, maybe seldomly as an extra.

This dog is going to be pretty big. I want him on a food that he will benefit from when it comes to his hips, joints and obviously overall health. The real high end foods like Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Evo, etc etc have me having mixed feelings to say the least. Years ago when these food werent available, dogs were living 15+ years outdoors on Pedigree and Dog Chow. Now it seems as if many of these dogs that eat these high end natural foods seem to be more susceptable to common allergies? Am I thinking too much about this?

Congrats on the new pup! Dawn or head and shoulders is way too harsh for such a young puppy. It's not a good idea to use human shampoos on a dog as their ph is completely different from ours. I'd suggest using a shampoo from a pet store that is guaranteed to be safe for puppies.
