Default Finding the right Terrier

Hello Everyone,

My name is Theresa, I'm a wife and mother of 4 beautiful boys. Also part of our family is a barn cat named Siamese Kitty, 2 bogs Gwynn (Lab/Great Pyrenees) and Tailem (Australian Shepherd) and 1 betta fish named Owen. We are a big family and live on a 22 acre almond farm. My husband and I have recently been thinking of adding a Terrier to our family. For two reasons, one is we have heard they are excellent at catching rodents which we have aplenty and our youngest son (who is 2) loves animals so much we thought a smaller dog would be a good buddy for him as the rest of the boys are in school. That being said and there being so many different breeds of terrier, would one be right for our home? If so is there a particular breed someone would recommend that I could research a little more.

Thanks you for all your help!

Welcome to df! Lots of nice people here. You will need to research terriers to see which would fit into your family best.
Maybe a rescue?

WELCOME to DF!! I hope to see pictures of your family, especially the furry ones I hope you will look into rescue as well, but if not a reputable breeder. Maybe a Jack Russel Terrier...

Welcome to the forum! Most terriers are great ratters, and very high energy. The choice of terrier will depend on what your family needs are. I take it the dog will be a working dog as well as a companion for your youngest?

Yes, ideally a working dog for the farm but also friendly enough for my youngest son! He absolutely loves animals!!!

As a terrier owner, I'm a bit biased - I have a Patterdale Terrier!

Patterdale's are great ratters, however, if you keep one as a working dog (as I do mine), it could become quite prey driven and adrenalin addicted (like mine). That doesn't make them great companions for children nor other dogs, but of course I can only speak for mine!! Patterdales in general - bearing in mind the Patterdales over here are largely from UK working stock and not recognised by the UK Kennel Club - are a recognised and popular breed in the States.

Jack Russell Terriers are a popular choice and may have better potential for being cuddly companions by night and savage killers by day, but it all depends. Giving a true terrier the opportunity to hunt and kill could present a small risk of you ending up with a very busy, hypervigilant and reactive dog - but not necessarily.

Border Terriers are a bit bigger, but still small ratters and quite amenable.

I would get onto Google and have a look around, talk to your vet maybe for some breeder recommendations and talk to a few!

No single opinion is going to count for much - for instance, my Patterdale makes a rotten kids pet and she's a total terror. But the same isn't true of ALL patterdales.
