Smile Mikey and Roxy!

Hi everyone!

My name is Mike and I've got a Black Labrador retriever named Roxy, when we're talking about her, we usually call her "The Rox" ei "I've gotta take the Rox out, you get breakfast started!" She's a few months old now and we've just brought her into the home a few weeks ago. She's a deadly fast learner and her willingness to work for you is unbelievable!

I've got some links, first there's my photo gallery of Roxy and I'll also put up the link to an article I wrote.

I'm very interested in dogs beyond being a dog owner, long before I got Roxy my research project began, I've read and looked at a wide variety of different resources except the one thing is that I haven't been able to lock down a lot of time with a professional trainer face to face. Which is something that I'm getting in touch with my Kennel club to acheive as soon as I can.

What I love about dogs is that it's not just about training either, there are a lot of interesting things that we know about the canine mind (not like I'd need to tell a forum full of dog owners ), and it doesn't end there either, with all manner of different dogs doing different tasks. Breeders, agility handlers, fishermen, farmers... You get the idea, it's almost hard to limit how much you want to experience with your dog, and I want to make the best choices I can.

No matter what you do with your dog you always get the best benefit of all when it comes to having a pooch and it's the companionship. I've been struggling with social anxiety and trying to find the balance, and no matter how deep I shut myself in, Roxy still makes me smile. To top it off, she doesn't care that I'm a mess, in fact she seems happy as ever about it. I think a puppy is the closest thing that you can get to unconditional love. Especially if you love the puppy back.

I joined and posted because I really want to talk to some like-minded people about an interest that I've held on to forever, but never been able to take as seriously as I wanted. I also want to make sure that I'm doing the best I can for Roxy so that she stays happy, healthy, and smart!

Welcome Mike, glad to have you and Roxy aboard. I had a look at her pictures, she is a lovely dog. Looking forward to hearing more about her and, of course, seeing tons more pictures :-)

Here's another that I had to post up, I love the way retrievers use their mouths so this one was instantly my my new favourite

edit: had to add the nose bite too... I feel conflicted in what to do about training her biting/mouthing. For the general rule, I really enjoy the mouthing, I just don't like being a chewtoy... I have a sweater that as soon as i put it on, she'll grab my forearm in her mouth and squeeeze like a chew toy, or sometimes she'll begin to nip at my fingers a bit too aggressively.

For the time being I've always got her scarf or a chewtoy on hand and I just pull a switcheroo on her, usually she goes on happy chewing on the toy and our problem is solved.

Should I be able to teach her that mouthing is okay as long as she's gentle without too many problems? From what I understand as a lab, (or is it as a retriever ) she can be very gentle with her mouth, so it doesn't seem too unreasonable to me.
