Default Weight loss

My 9yr old mutt Murphy lost a lot of weight suddenly and stopped eating his dry food. His bloodwork came back ok and he is now eating IAMS canned food and has gained some weight back. Is it normal for their eating preference to just suddenly change? Also, he rolls over onto his back and hold that position often as if it feels good or relieves pain. Has anyone ever seen that?

mrsziggs, welcome to the forum! Have you taken Murphy to the vets to make sure he's ok? If you have, it is not unusual during the summer for a dog to not want much to eat. I'm not sure where you live, but I can tell you when my Collies blow their coat, and it's hot outside, they are not as active. So they do drop a few pounds. I never force them to eat, so if they don't eat their breakfast, they will eat at dinner time. I will say I have changed my dogs food from time to time. You should read the thread on kibble grading by vagreys. He is the best! The thread is very informative, and it made me look at what I was feeding my dogs. Please post a picture of Murphy. We love pictures!

What makes you think he is in pain?

What did the vet who did the blood work have to say about the weight loss?

Yep. These questions, and also, does your mutt have a deep chest like a hound, or a big barrel chest like a bully breed, or an average chest that isn't particularly deep or round?
