Default I am at the end of my rope with my beloved Cur dog.

Hi I am new to this forum and my name is Cissy.

I am at the end of my rope with a Cur dog that came up to our house and he had been abused and someone had shot him, so we took him to the vet and got him taken care of.

He was skin and bones and covered with fleas, and he was not socialized to people and it took a solid week before he would even allow me to touch his head, but after a lot of patience on my part and showing him love he is a loving dog, and I adore him. He is a Lousiana Cur dog, and I've had him about 9 months now.

This is the problem...............he is terrified of storms, gun shots, fireworks, and goes crazy and busts against our front door and window trying to get in the house, and at first we did let him in, but he does not get along with my tiny poodle and it's not fair to her, to have to be put up. Also he is not house broken and we live in a mobile home with not a lot of extra space...........this dog has torn up our glass front door and we had to replace it, and now hes slowly working on the new one, and hes torn up the screens on the front and back doors. We have his dog house up on our screened in patio and he also can get under our large porch if he so chooses, but again he goes crazy. I tried to latch him outside off the screened in porch and due to the fact hes so big, he busted the front wooden screen door.

I am not a spring chicken anymore and can't deal with him cause if you need to get out the front door you have to fight him tooth and nail not to get in the house, and I have health issues............please help as I can't take much more.

I can't give him away as he is NOT people friendly and I am afraid someone else would abuse him, and that would break my heart. I might add he's been neutered.

Thanks for your advice............all welcome. I saw an add about a thing called thundershirt, it's some type of vest you put on your dog and it's suppost to calm them and they are no longer afraid of storms, gunshots and fireworks...........but not sure if I would be spending for nothing. I've already spent a fortune on this dog trying to break him from his quirks..........and honestly can't spend much more.

Cissy

Hi Cissy OMG poor dog and how kind of you to rescue this neglected and abused dog In your third paragraph you mention patience and by the sounds of it you have a lot and you are seeing some results But there's no need to go it alone! Have you seen a behaviourist/trainer about this dog you need a proper evaluation on this. Have a word with your vet about this he/she should be able to put you on to a positive trainer who only uses kindness in their training methods What is he like on a leash will he go out for a walk this could certainly help with his potty training. Please stick around here as other replies will come. Like you say you can't take much more but neither can you abandon him! Is he chipped? Do take care Cissy and please keep us all informed about your dog what's his name? ATB xxxx

He won't walk on a leash very well at all. He is a hard one to train, and would love to have him seen by a trainer but truly can't afford it right now as I am facing surgery............possibly cancer.

I've spent a fortune on this dog already and would spend another fortune if I could, and by the way his name is Red. He is a blondish red color and it just seemed to fit him.

I've spoken to 2 vets and both have told me being the fact the way Red's life was when I rescued him, I may never be able to bring him out of this...............they did say I could get pills to give him to help calm him during storms and I hate to do that, but the only other alternative I have is to put him to sleep and my heart is breaking.

Thank you for your reply.

Anti anxiety medication may benefit him greatly. You can use Valerian root rather than prescription. My co-workers dog gets 1100mgs and is a whopping 13lbs. It can take the edge off for him and for you as far as the destructive tendencies with the noises. Also, have you considered shortening the tie out you have him on? If he cannot get to the doors he cannot destroy them.

If you don't have much experience working with a dog like this, I would highly recommend seeking out a trainer/behaviorist. Do you know how old Red is? Maybe a guess?

Honestly, I think he needs a very constant routine and just tying out all day won't do it. From what I know about Cur's I know they do need a tremendous amount of socialization at a young age. I also know they need exercise and most people who have them use them for hunting. One of my clients has a few and she says they really enjoy the companionship of people and don't do well without it. Without seeing how he is, I don't know what help I can give you I do with you the best and will be more than happy to answer any questions that I can. I commend you for rescuing him.

Cissy you say you have health issues in your opening post Are you on any benifits if you are you may be able to get free or a reduced cost towards any rehabilitation he may need Re his issues with loud bangs such as fireworks, don't feel bad giving him pills or for that matter drops to sedate him it isn't cruel and it doesn't knock them out it just calms them down. My Nipper is scared of fireworks so I now have some drops totaly herbal and they do work so I wouldn't rule that out And isn't as bad as pts where there is hope you must not give up on him! Yes it's difficult
to think what's the best for him if he can be helped then help him he deserves a second chance and any pics of Red ? ATB

Louuie first of all Red is never tied up, he has a good fenced in yard to run at his will and he has toys and he is played with a lot, so he gets the excercise and attention he needs.............I read up on Cur dogs and found out they have to be active.

I've worked with him trying to get him to walk on a leash and he's come around some, but he is terrified of being tied up, honestly if I ever had to tie him up, he would break his neck trying to get off the contraint.

I don't know exactly how old he is, but when he first came up here I took him straight to the vet as he was bleeding from being shot at, he was only grazed, but he was skin and bones and covered with fleas, and I loved him instantly as I am an avid dog lover and he just melted my heart, when I looked into those red sad eyes he had me from the get go. I've had him around 9 months and the vet felt he might have been maybe 10 months old or so...........so I guess he's maybe around 19 months old, and of course were guessing.

It took much longer before Red would warm up to my husband as he was terribly afraid of men.............he loves and trusts my husband now, but he adores me, if I am on the scene he leaves everyone else and stays right by my side, and is very protective of me.

I love him so much.............

Bigboy I can't get any help like that as my husband works and I get a very small disability check, and we just can't afford a trainer. I definately am going to try the pills or preferrably something natural.

This dog I truly believe would defend me to his death...........he is totally devoted to me. The first week he was here, I was on our screened in porch talking very softly to him and telling him I would make him trust me..........and he does now, but boy wasn't sure I was going to bring him around. He was so scared, he had ran in our neigbor hood for awhile and I tried to get him to stay but we had just had our fence put in and it had high places and he would get out under it, but now the fence is fixed and honestly he won't leave me long enough. Hehe he has it pretty good, and he truly deserves it, I hate when anyone is cruel to an animal, it gets my dander up pretty quick.

Yes I have pictures of him, but mercy I am still trying to figure out this forum on how to reply to post and such..............I have no clue how to put a picture to this page. The pictures I have of him are not long after we got him, and hes MUCH prettier now.........he's all filled out and has muscle. Bless his heart he was so starved we thought he had mange, as he had no hair, but the vet did some test and he was just so nutritunally (SP) down, and he would have died last winter from the cold if we had not gotten him and fattened him up.

Thanks to you and everyone for trying to help me.

Cissy you know dogs do come round eventually but it does ( as I am sure you have found out takes time ) I am pretty sure he does trust you now time is a great healer!!! If you could find some payment plan where you pay monthly to have a trainer in as I do believe it can help speed up the rehab side of things A intial assesment from a trainer might even be
free A dogs love is pure and you have found this in Red and so young too It's a wonderful story you are a and truly dedicated! That's
a very special quality and something to be admired ATB

Oh Cissy....I can't add to the good advice you've already received, but wanted to say that your post really had me tearing-up! What a kind hearted person you are, and that poor dog, how lucky he is to have found you.

I can further recommend natural calming tablets....valerian and skullcap together are very effective, I use them on my crazy terrier. The vet could also give you Zylkene, but that stuff is expensive....

Thanks to everyone for your advice and help, I am calling my vet to see what I can get for him, because he's such a wonderful loving dog.

Believe me I am no angel I just love animals and I get so upset when anyone is mean to them
