Exclamation Hi I'm new and think my dog is pregnant! HELP!!

Hi everyone,

Well I have a pure breed English staffy who name is Lulu. She is about 5/6 years old not sure really as we rescued her. She is a lovely dog but she was not de sexed and now I think she is pregnant!

Can anyone please tell me how do you know if your dog is pregnant?? She is off her food and looks depressed and her teats look bigger. This is not good timing as I have just given birth myself to a little boy who is 3 weeks old so the thought of looking after puppies is scaring me.

My next door neighbours male dog has been trying to have sex with Lulu but I didn't think they did. We always kept them apart but maybe not good enough. He is a foxy/pommy/Chihuahua! & she is a pure English staffy its going to be a odd mix!!!

What can I do? what do I do? Should I can't her to the vets to get checked out?

Please help me

Hi and welcome aboard to Df Staffy85 Sorry to hear this! I think really this is a lesson learned! to spey if you don't have the time or the people that could be potential new owners of the pups then the responsible thing to do is is to get her done. As it wouldn't be right to bring new lives in to this world if they say for eg they ended up in a shelter. I am pretty sure a vet can advise you what to do next and to see if she is pregnant. I would certainly ask straight away. Good luck with this and please keep us informed as to whats happening regarding Lulu ATB take care.

Please get your dog to the vet asap so they can confirm pregnancy and offer advice/guidance. It is impossible to diagnose such things over the internet.

Quite agreed but sometimes money is the issue and I feel that more help should be given to people on low incomes! ATB

You are likely to get a number of "Holier-than-Thou" answers, based on recent posts. Ignore them. You should take your staffy to the vet, asap, to determine if it is pregnancy or something else going on. Be aware that you can have her spayed, even if she is pregnant (obviously, the pregnancy is terminated in the process); it is harder on the mother because the hormones don't subside, instantly, but it can be done, safely. Every day you delay makes it more difficult. The equivalent of the SPCA in Australia may provide discounted or free spaying services, if you can't afford to have your private vet do it; otherwise, you might want to check with other shelter operations or spay/neuter programs in the area.

I agree with Vagrey as well, you have many options, but as stated above; the sooner you take action the more options you will have.

I would have the vet palpate her - if she is far enough along he can xray her. Honestly, with a newborn, your best option might be to have her spayed now. Puppies are a lot of work, and so is finding good homs for them.

Hey

thank you for all your advice. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow to get her check out.

I would like to make a point that we have only had her to about 2 months as we found her wondering around in a car park by herself with no collar on. I had joined my sister-in-law for a walk with her dog when we saw her wondering around. We took her to the vets but she wan't micro-chipped. I called up anyone (council etc.) to see if anyone had lost her and put an ad in the newspaper and put up poster with her photo on it in dog parks and where we found her. No one replied. She was so kind and a loving dog and she was great with my 2 year old girl that we thought we would keep her and give her a home for life. She is now part of our family. I don't understand why anyone would want to get rid of her.

We did take her to the vets when we decided to keep her so she could get a check up and vacs but at the time we didn't get her sprayed as we didn't have the money. Wish we did now!!

I will keep you all updated. thank you
