Default Hello :)

I'm Delti. I live in Southern California with my family's seven dogs as well as the various foster dogs we foster for a local Siberian Husky rescue...usually we have between 8 and 12 dogs in our house at any given time. Since I'm sure everyone's more interested in my furry companions than me () here they are:

At 9 or 10 (by our estimate), Odie is is the senior citizen of the family. My dad caught him running around on the street outside his work, and he's been with us ever since - despite our best efforts to locate his owners. We think he's an Alaskan Malamute/Siberian Husky mix. Odie is a therapy dog and goes with my dad several times a month to local hospitals, senior citizen homes, etc., although Odie works best with children!

Mika is "my" dog of the bunch. She's a 4 year old super-Siberian Husky with the incredible ability to go from couch potato to hyperactive working dog in a blink of the eye. She tends to laze about on the couch or a bed until a harness comes out and all of the sudden you've got a puppy bouncing around at your feet, ready to get to work. Mika is a rescue; we adopted her when she was about a year old, the first dog we acquired from the rescue we currently work with. She is also a therapy dog.

Juno is a red Siberian Husky about 3 years old. She really is my dog (since Mika is really the whole family's); I picked her up at one of our adoption events when she was 4 months old and she hasn't left my arms since (literally - I probably have the only Sibe in the world that expects to be picked up and carried around like a small dog).

(First pic as a puppy, second as an adult)
Tilly is the only non-Sibe or mal of our dogs. We don't have the faintest idea what exactly she is (she's very much a mix), although she looks a lot like a Briard. She's just barely three years old, and is celebrating her birthday this month. Tilly is also a rescue; we fostered and placed her entire litter, which ranged in appearance from looking like her to looking like giant Shiba Inus, for a friend's neighbor in return for their getting the puppies and their mother altered. My mom likes the fluffy terrier look and my dad doesn't like the fluffy terrier size, so Tilly was their compromise - the look my mom wanted but big enough for my dad (these photos are misleading, as Tilly stands about 5'1" on her hind legs - she's very tall!).

Samson is our lonely Alaskan Malamute (there is probably some Sibe in there, since his sister was bi-eyed, but his personality and appearance are all mal!). He's another rescue, and four years old. Samson was our first foster fail; after months of watching people reject him for his woolly coat, large size, and tendency to jump out of ex-pens without taking the time to get to know him, we found we also couldn't stand the thought of saying goodbye to him, which meant he got to stay. True to malamute nature, Sam is quite the talker and always makes his opinion heard.

Cashew, pictured on the left, is a two year old "miniature" Siberian Husky (a true mini, not a Klee Kai - we have a BYB near us that breeds the runts of normal Sibe litters together to get consistently smaller puppies, then brags about how much money she makes to us :/). He and his brother, Tango (pictured on the right), both suffered from distemper as young puppies and both were made blind and have seizures because of it; we finally put Tango down last year because of the seizures. My older sister kept Cash, who *knocks on wood* has not had such a hard time of it with seizures but would have still been nearly impossible to place.

Holly is the newest addition to the family and our second foster fail. An almost two year old Alaskan Husky, she can be quite the handful; in addition to the usual husky puppy hyperactivity and destructiveness, Holly clears six foot block wall fences with ease (our fences, as it happens, are 6 foot block wall with wrought iron extensions that raise them up to 8 feet) and is still raring to go after five mile jogs. I'm hoping to begin training Holly in agility and rally-o this year to help burn off some of her energy (we can't work them in harness during the summer and walking and jogging don't cut it in terms of mental stimulation, so she needs another outlet!). She is currently training to become our third therapy dog.

Hi Delti and

What a magnificent introduction! Wow - that is a lot of dogs to have in your house at once! They are all beauties! And that's great that you do therapy, so do I.

That person who is breeding runts and bragging about the money would really make me mad! Hey you could report her to the IRS .

Welcome I have to say I am not a fan of the Malamutes mostly cause they are too furry for me but I LOVE the one of yours. Very striking. I like the looks of them. Like big cuddly bears

Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone.

skunkstripe - I don't do therapy work with them (yet), since there isn't an insurance company out there that will insure someone my age. But my parents both do, and I've helped a lot with training them and with evaluations (my dad's the director of the program they work with, as well as one of the evaluators). Once I'm old enough, though, I plan on certifying with Mika or Holly.

Techie - We don't have any more of a problem with them than with any other double coated breed. ^^ Our four females and Cash actually go out and sunbathe in 90+ degree heat. When they come in, their topcoat is very hot to the touch, but their undercoat is very cool. Mostly they're just less active during the middle of the day and more active in the evenings and mornings.

k9 - Sam is a woolly malamute, which is what gives him the teddy bear look.
