![]() Hello to everyone. I am currently not a dog owner, but I am looking to own
my first. Since I suffer from anxiety I was told that a dog would be beneficial for me. I am trying to chose between a shepherd and a golden. Looking into several factors, pros and cons of both breeds. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks |

![]() Hi Goldie and
![]() Offhand I'd say that a Shepherd is likely to give you a feeling of protection which the Golden won't. The Golden on the other hand is likely to be very lovey-dovey and schmoozy.

![]() Hello and welcome to the forum!
I would also consider that if you are generally an anxious person, it could make a natural protective and sensitive dog like a shepherd, anxious and protective on your behalf and potentially result in a nervous dog - so if you go down that route be sure of picking a good solid genetic line with steady nerves. Both the breeds you have picked are lovely but will offer a different type of companionship - from what I understand a Shepherd will require a stronger type of leadership and a Golden may be easier to look after for a first time dog as they are generally very soft and friendly. There are a number of other breeds that may also suit you, but ultimately I think that it's the one you fall in love with. I was after a shepherd or a dobermann recently...and i've ended up with a Pointer. Sometimes fate intervenes ![]()

![]() Hello and Welcome!
I haven't had much experience with either breeds. Just make sure you do your research in order to get the qualities that you desire and don't forget that you may not get the best qualities the breed has to offer. I can't wait to see which breed you decide to go with! Exciting! Enjoy your puppy seeking journey!! Ashley

![]() Aw, they're both great breeds. I've always been drawn to Goldens but have not had the privilege of owning one yet...someday perhaps! I think Melampahine made some excellent points. Good luck to you and please let us know what you decide to do!

![]() Hello & welcome to df. I agree with what Mel said.
You would need to find a really good breeder that does all the health checks of the parents b4 breeding & socialise puppies well b4 going to their new homes, which needs to be kept up when they go to their new homes. I have heard that shephards are nervy these days.

![]() Hello and welcome to the forum!
I'd suggest the Shephard. But having saying that the some Shephards temperaments can be quite hard to handle. Some on the other hand are lovely. I have no experience with either breed so I guess it is up to you and the other members to decide hehe.. If you would like to find out about the Shephard I'd recommened talking to sheplovr. This is a tough one. Maybe we could do a poll?
