Default Checking in...

Howdy! I'm checking in to give a hello to everyone. Don't own a dog yet, but I plan on getting one come spring, and will be in occasionally to do some information mining.

How's this for starters: What should I get? I definitely want a medium to large dog who's trainable and can be left alone (with a couple cats) for 9 hours. Not 9 hours every day, since my girlfriend works a weird schedule, but 9 hours on occasion. I'd prefer a mutt to avoid health issues and expenses.

Any ideas of a good mix? Thanks. -LJ

My best advice would be to start looking at local shelters, and seeing what is out there. there isnt really a Good Mix, It is just per dog But Yes, DEFENTLY Look at the dogs in shelters, they need loving homes And that is Great of you to take on a rescue!

Yep, shelters are definitely one of the options (tho I want a puppy or young'un). There's a few Thai rescue orgs on petfinder.com, is there a stigma with those dogs? They all seem healthy (and really cool-looking!), but it might be selling, too...

Hi Littlejohn, and welcome

It is sometimes hard to generalize about which dogs are ok with cats and which aren't. "Good" shelters will check out the dogs they have for adoption and let you know. Usually if they know a dog is not good with cats they won't even let you have it after you have filled out the form telling what other pets you have.

What do you mean exactly by Thai?

They rescue dogs from Thailand: http://www.soidogrescue.org/. I'm sure there are others that do other countries, but this one seems predominant.

Don't really have one, I guess. Wouldn't want to go above $300, tho, and that's including whatever adoption fees apply.
