Talking New to dogs (but not exactly)!

Hello!

I'm Bree (that's part of my middle name, don't give out name on the internet ) and I'm a sophomore in high school right now. For my 16th birthday, my mom got me a car and permission to finally get a puppy!!! I am SO SO SO excited. I absolutely love animals, especially horses and dogs. For the longest time she has said no puppy for me because we have already "too many animals" (you can never have enough, what's she talking about? ), and because if I got a puppy it would stay in the house and bother her cats. She has allowed me to get a puppy on the condition that I prove to her she will not need to spend any effort herself on the dog - meaning I have to learn by myself exactly how to raise one! My dad told me to go join a forum, so here I am!

The funny thing is, though, that I am not new to dogs at all, even if this is my first puppy. I currently have 9 dogs on the property. We have
Loki and Noren - Bullmastiff siblings trained as Sentry dogs
Etta and Bo - both are Dogue de Bordeaux, French imports trained as Guard dogs
Havoc and Sin - Belgian Malinois, imports from Belgium trained as guard dogs
Raven - German shepherd, personal protection dog (my mom's)
Churchill and Hunter - German shepherd, German working line imports, my dad competes with them in Schutzhund.
oh, and our doberman died last month and my dad wants to get a Tibetan Mastiff, so that will be 10 dogs soon.
All of them have been shipped/imported over as adults and not "pet material". I barely ever see the dogs and am not allowed to play with them, so not fun for me!

My mom is into exotic cats, she once had a serval and now has 3 caracals, Liddy, Carol, and Gem. They get along okay with the dogs, actually, and are super friendly, but I've never been a cat person.
We also have horses, my mom has Arabians, thoroughbreds, and Andalusians that she uses for Dressage.

My horses:
Hope - white, 8 year old Andalusian
Demon - black, 9 year old Alter-real
Eclipse - black 6 year old Friesian horse
Blade - black 6 year old Friesian horse
I only ride them, I don't really like competing.

Anyway, we pretty much live in a zoo, but I am still so excited for a puppy! I'm so odd.

Oh my god, that is a TON of writing, didn't mean to do that!

Hi and welcome to the dog forums. If your dad gets a Tibetan mastiff then you will have to post pics and I love the freisians, you have good breeds there, and I bet that you have never had any problems with people breaking in lol.

Thanks! He went to Tibet before (without me! :O ) and those dogs really amazed him. According to him, they were like canine lions.

I'm actually not allowed to post pictures online (I have the most paranoid parents ever) which really sucks because I love making collages of my horses on my computer. Although, I really don't see the harm in posting a picture of a dog... xD

Thank you! Friesian horses are my favorite, I love their structure! My mom was the one who got me into horses, and they are a huge part of my life.

And you're right, we don't have any problems with breaking in anymore. My dad completely distrusts the alarm systems, and says that only dogs are reliable now! Maybe a little out there, but I don't mind, I sleep well at night

Hi Bree and welcome, sounds like you have an impressive zoo!

A Tibetan Mastiff has been on my wish list ever since I was a kid. My family used to have Pyrenean Mountain dogs as pet/guard dogs but they were big soppy idiots with us...the bitch thought I was her baby and god help any stranger that tried to get near me. I just love big dogs and the TM are so beautiful.

I don't have space for a biggie at the moment, so I'm very jealous Bree!

What puppy are you thinking of getting as a pet?

I know... my parents are over protective and paranoid (another reason for the load of guard dogs we have). I hope that I could watch the Tibetan Mastiff compete, I've only seen it on TV and the internet, and even that amazes me!

I have never come face to face with one, but I really am awed by the breed! I recently watched a show featuring a famous Chinese celebrity who quit his acting career, took the money he earned, and devoted his life to raising Tibetan Mastiffs. Amazing dogs. And here, our family has nothing but room, even with all the other animals about!

I was having a tough time deciding... I want a dog that's medium-large sized (My mom's caracals would be sure to eat a tiny lap dog! ). I actually do want a German shepherd (we just don't have enough!) because they are one of my favorite breeds, and I have *some* experience handling adult GSDs. However, I'm hoping that this forum and some more research will help me make a decision!
