Default Newbie with a question

Hello all,
New here and right out of the box I have a question.
First off I own a 3 year old Lhasa Apso male.
He's a healthy dog, eats fine has normal bowel etc.
But about 3 months ago a good friend of ours moved away. This was someone that my dog looked for every morning and every evening.
Since that time he spends most of his time hiding under our bed. He will play from time to time but seems fearful of things, such loud noises etc.
He asks for attention when he wants it but other then that it's under the bed.

Any had a dog suffer from depression??? Or any suggestions on what the problem might be?
All suggestions welcome.

Hi Lhasalady and

There IS a very good chance that your doggy misses the company of the friend who looked after him mornings and evenings. They DO grieve in a way.

What is his day like otherwise?

Hello and welcome to the forum. Great to have you with us. I hope you'll post some pics of your dog as we'd love to see them.

I recommend you look for some new activities & schedule lots of outings (with lots of new types of exercise). An obedience class would be an ideal option to get your dog some socialization with new dogs & people in addition to redirecting his mind to learning new behaviors.

Default Newbie With a Question - Thanks for the welcome

Thanks to everyone for the welcome.

To respond to the question what's his day like? I've worked during the day up until about 6 months ago when I changed jobs, went to part time night work that leaves him alone for between 6 and 8 hours starting mid afternoon. During the day I am home but because I operate two web businesses I'm frequently on the computer for 5, 6 hours at a time.

I have wondered if he might be jealous of the computer?

When I'm home we go for walks together and I let him sit out on our deck. He also has a dog friend that I let him stay with or have that dog over.. so I don't think it's exercise.

A friend of mine who works with rescue dogs suggested that i ignore him and not tempt him out with special treats and food like I have been doing. She thinks it will only take a couple of days for him to give in and return to his normal social self.

I'll have to figure out how to post pictures .. LOL.
Will do that over the weekend.

Your friend's advice could be very valid. If you're going to your dog & coaxing him treats, you are likely reinforcing his behavior. Try the ignore method to see if that works. In addition, try going out of his sight & making enticing, playful sounds that cause him to be curious enough to come to you to see what you're doing. Once he's out & interacting with you, treat & praise him while creating the opportunity to enjoy a fun game.

You can upload pics to your own personal gallery by clicking on "Gallery" on the blue bar at the top of the forum page. Then choose "Upload Photos". Once you've uploaded some pics to your gallery, follow these instructions to place pics in your posts:

Hi Lhasalady,
I don't think that he is jealous of the computer. He may just be bored and in need of attention. What kind of activities do you do with him, and what kind of attention do you give him? Do you play with him, snuggle with him or things like that?

By the way here is some help on how to post pictures:

Default Hiding Lhasa

He gets attention whenever he wants it plus we go for at least 3 walks a day and have one or two play sessions.. well we used to before he took to hiding all the time.

He gets belly rubs in the morning and we cuddle and snuggle in bed which he usually starts by waking me up and pawing his way in under the covers.

I have started the ignoring as of today. So far he's been out and about, helping me put groceries away, but the moment I keyed up the lap top he disappeared under the bed.. I swear he's jealous!

Maybe the reason he seems to be jealous is that he has figured out that once you are on the laptop, you will be there for a while where he can pester you?
