Hi All,
I am actively looking for our second dog and have came across a gorgeous if slightly underweight, sad and forlorn lurcher who is described as above (greyhound x collie x bull), he's young at 3 years and looks like he could keep up with our Harley no problem. I haven't came across a dog of this mix in the flesh before have any of you and how did you find him or her to be? Also anyone have any idea how long it might take to house train an older dog (not sure if he has been house trained or not). Any inside info. on keeping lurchers would be appreciated as currently my two youngest know much more about them than I do, we all love them though and I am keen to learn as much as possible because if it doesn't turn out to be this one I am quite sure our second dog will be a lurcher/grey or sighthound or some similar mix. Cheers |

Hello,
Our girl Cassie is a collie x Greyhound x EBT, they are a bit brighter then greyhounds and they have a bit more muscle. They seem to be the mix of choice for workers, Cassie was used a lot for rabbiting and can not be trusted with anything small and fluffy (which includes cats). We got her when she was 3 or so and we have had no problem with house training her. We went right back to basics and treated her like a puppy. She was a very nervous dog at first but with time and space she has really come out of herself. Where ever we go everyone loves Cassie.

Thanks Raz, yes your Cassie looks adorable too. The dog we are looking at looks a bit bedraggled just now, apparently he hashn't been looked after as well as he should have been but there is a photo attached of how he looked before he was left to get into such a state and he looks like a very handsome chap. I don't think he was a worker but will find out more about him in the next day or so. In the sad photo he has the same look in his eyes as Harley had when we first seen him and he's proven to be such a sweetie so here's hoping.

Like Raz said they are the choice for workers, the collie brings good intellentance, the grey brings speed, and any bull breed brings determation into the mix, which is a good thing for any workers, just be careful that the dog doesn't become smarter then you lol. The bull and the collie can make a dog what is called a 'all rounder' so be careful of anything, the dog might of been trained to retrieve by the workers if it was a working dog, so a game of catch would be great, but some people would still illegally use the dogs to kill and bring back Foxes, although some dogs have been known to bring foxes back to their owners live, so be really careful lol, unless you want a live fox brought back to you.
if you have cats, which I don't know if you do the lurchers can be great inside the house with them, but outside the house they will be fair game for the dog. Some lurchers will bite other dogs when running, its just instinct in them, normally the bum lol, this can be a prolem if Harley has thin skin, but your dog might not do it and you will probaly be fine, recall can also not be the best if the dog see's something, lurchers can still have a very high prey drive even if they have never been worked any small furry can still become a cropper so watch out. When you first get your dog I would use a longlone, to see how the dogs recall is, or even better a fully enclosed area where the dog can not escape from. Oh and Lurchers can jump high. Oh and one more note, the word Lurcher translates as 'lur' which means theif and 'cur' which means mongrel, these are old romany translations, so be careful of anything that your dog might want as they are good theifs, Honey has taken sausages out of a pan that they were cooking in before, someone had left the sausages cooking to go a toilet quickly and Honey had them, they come back to a empty pan of cooking oil, and Diesel had figured out how to open the treat cupboard when everyone was out once, there was no treats left when we got back lol.

Your chances of finding information on this mix are slim - given the large number of breeds, once you start considering two and three-way mixes the number of possibilities becomes astronomical.
As far as housetraining an older dog it makes a difference what her life was like before. If she spent a lot of time outdoors it might be surprisingly easy. If she was cooped up in something like a garage or kennel it will be very difficult. But it can be done.

My Harley is a toughy he can cope with nipping and rough play as one of his best friends is a young border terrier that actually dangles from various parts of his anatomy, usually his mouth! Another of his firm favourites is a very large mastiff who plays almost as rough as Harley does! |
