hey yall i am pretty new to this forum...but so far i am loving it.. its great to see so many caring dog people.. i live in Mississippi and i swear its like everyone down here is 50 years behind the rest of the world haha.. most people down here still treat dogs and animals in general like property..they don’t realize dogs can be happy, sad, hungry, scared, mad, or excited just like us humans can..
anyways about 2 years ago my brother in law adopted a dog from the local pound..and he didn’t take good care of him so I said I wanted him..we were told he was a husky mix..but I really don’t think he is..I was just wondering were I could get one of those DNA tests to find out what kind of cross he is.. It doesn’t really matter to me what he is I am just curious. His name is Echo..also he is extremely shy around males.. He only has one eye and the left side of his skull is caved in due to being hit with a hammer or something like that.. If my husband or any male even talks loudly echo will yelp and run and hide.. He got in the trash once and my husband yelled “no” and echo hid for 3 days!! I was just wondering how we could help him to be more confided and not so scared.. |

Hi Tera and bless you for taking Echo in!
I did the DNA test for Zircon (the one that cost about $70) and I can't say I'd recommend it. http://www.dogforum.org/showthread.php?t=18886 It was entertaining but I don't think I got any real information out of it. This was the Canine Heritage" breed test, there is also the "Wisdom Panel" from a different company. It not only costs, more, you have to have your vet draw a blood sample so all in all it will cost about $130-$150. I think it may be more reliable than the Canine Heritage though. Regarding Echo being shy around males - I can't say I blame him if he's beeen abused by one. Sophia was a fearful, shy dog too when we got her. Things that help are 1) never scold, never raise your voice. Even if you're mad as heck, when Echo has done something wrong, just ignore it. When he's done something right though, praise him. 2) teach him some obedience commands. Dogs that know what is expected of them are less likely to be fearful. 3) Do agility exercises. Agility has been found to be a confidence builder for dogs like Echo. Best I can do, so good luck!

[quote=skunkstripe;230611]Hi Tera and bless you for taking Echo in!
thanks so much... i will try those suggestions.. we have had him for almost 2 years now and it never has been a problem before we just always over looked it..but now that our son is becoming old enough to play with him and our other dogs it worrys me.. i would hate for him to snap out of fear or something like that.. |
