For the past few years I have been looking for others who have enjoyed the company of an Elkhound. So far I have only managed to bump into three people. I have had many who see her or her pics and think she is an Akita, that is why I asked for the guesses in my introduction. I just wanted to see if anyone was familiar with Elkhounds.
My girl Zoe was a mistake (mom was an Elkhound, dad was a Chow) when she was born and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and ended up bringing her fuzzy butt home. The only Chow qualities I have seen is her Orange coat and her purple/black tongue. Other than that she is a chip off her mother's block. Super smart and stubborn( makes a frustration combo sometimes), very loyal and watchful of strangers. Some of her odd qualities include: a nose for buried metal. I have a box full of unearthed objects that include a forty foot length of chain, an old serving spoon, hangers, a car axle(that got taken to the dump), a broken head of a shovel that was at least three feet down in the dirt, nuts and bolts, paint cans and a few other odds and ends. She has a rock collection. On our walks she sometimes takes interest in certain stones and will carry them home and put them in her pile beside the shed. If she finds more than one on our excursions, she will give them to me and I carry them in my pocket till we get home. Her energy level is amazing, she would walk for hours upon hours and then walk some more. She is not treat motivated, I learnt that right off the bat at puppy school, you won't win her heart with hot dogs or milkbones, she is totally praise driven. We currently have three levels of obediance and I am looking into maybe doing some agility work with her if we can overcome her fear of larger dogs. She was attacked by a Golden Retriever when she was just a year old and had her private parts ripped up very badly, two more attacks by the same loose dog after that has left her with some socialization problems. Hard to meet and greet a new dog when they want to sniff the part that has caused so much pain. So that's a little bit of her story. Thanks for letting me share. |

Hi and welcome to the forum from Jake and me.
Zoe is beautiful - its interesting that she collects rocks. Maybe she needs a Zen garden! She sounds like a wonderful character. Looking forward to more adventures of Zoe, thanks for sharing. |

LOL......I love it!! A zen garden, I will have to start work on that this spring when the snow dissapears. I still have her very first stone, I clear coated it and have it on my dining room table. That one was a bit of a scare. She was only three months old and she found a rock that she liked, I paniced and tried to take it away (I had yet to discover her stone fetish) and she swallowed it. I rushed her to the vet, it was a large stone and he said to see what happened in the next few hours along with the precautions and what to watch for. The next morning she yakked it up and all was well.
Oh so many adventures! Thanks for the idea Jake. |

As you've still got snow - and she is obviously a buddhist LOL - you need to do as the buddhist monks in tibet do and walk around in her footprints in the snow!
Zen gardens are lovely! |

Now that you mention Elkhounds, I thought that dog looked familiar!
http://www.dogforum.org/showthread.php?t=17617 But that is too funny about the rock collection. I thought that was only something that silly Labbies do. I've seen them do it even by gathering them from underwater in ponds. They do have their quirks, don't they? ![]()

Someone here has an Elkie??!!?? Oh joy!! I sure do hope to meet them and possibly have a chat. Such wonderful dogs they are. I am seriously thinking that when I get my entire yard fenced in, I have a huge backyard, I will get a purebred to keep Zoe company. Although I am sure the cats would want to send out for me to get my head checked adding another dog into "THEIR" house. Zoe is not a total water dog, she loves to play in the wading pool and just get her feet and face wet, she has even gone as far as stealing the neighbour's sprinkler and dragging it as far as possible into our yard to bite the water. When we go out to camp though she will not go in the lake, she tries to keep as far away from it as possible, but with her nosey nose sometimes the frogs get the better of her and she is grasping with all her toes to keep hold of the rocks so her precious tootsies dont' go in the lake. For bathtime, which is only once a year after spring is done, because she has no doggy odor (a lovely Elkie quality) it is a family effort to haul her to the tub. Funny how 50lbs can get so heavy. Afterwards she sits and pouts while she dries while giving us all the evil eye. Maybe I should get her a Lab friend to show her what wonderful underwater treasures she is missing staying on dry land?? |

i have a norwegian elkhound mix with a black/blue tongue. i have always wondered about that blue tongue - are you saying that the blue tongue is a sure indication of chow genes? my dog looks exactly like a norwegian elkhound, but she is larger and has a slightly pointier face. she loves water and dives under to retrieve logs. she used to be a bit rebellious when she was younger, but has become very obedient now that she's older. very loyal, but also independent. very communicative dog. doesn't collect rocks, but brings a lot of driftwood home.
