Want to know what breed mix you have ?
Well the time has finally come . Dna databases from purebred dogs are now being used to determine the breed make-up of your mixed breed dog . You swab the inside of your dogs cheek and send it in for analysis and after processing you get the results . I have seen tests done by owners and experts as to what the breed mix is and have yet to see anyone nail it, they may get components right but you usually have three or four breeds in there with one or two being the dominant breed . Here are a couple that I've heard of , but there are more that I can't think of . www.canineheritage.com www.whatsmydog.com cost is about $65.00 US , but I'm sure it's worth it if you really want to know! |

Skunkstripe has used their services. More info here:
Going to get Zircon's DNA analyzed I believe there's another thread on the subject here but since the forum search needs four letters to search, I couldn't think of the search terms to use to find it. I'm sure Skunkstripe will see this & point you in the right direction.

Here's the thread with the update:
http://www.dogforum.org/showthread.php?t=8389 So far I wouldn't say that the test answers all your questions.... more like it gives you something to talk about. And if my information is correct they are deliberately avoiding testing for certain so-called "dangerous breeds" because of potential legal liability. But still, I'm getting my money's worth out of it from the entertainment value. ![]()

Sorry about that , I did search and didn't get any results .
I don't want to be that guy who always rehashes already covered subjects . With all of the breed questions I thought this would be a topic of interest especially when experts are far too often wrong in their guesses about heritage. I should have known by the level of knowledge and caring owners around here that it was covered before my apologies |

It's a cool subject so I don't mind rehashing it with new dogs & new circumstances. I was just pointing out that we have a mod who has actually used their services.

Yeah...don't worry about bringing up the topics again. We have a ton of new members that don't know about it. Sounds like a cool idea but not at $70 for me....I just make up a different breed that Bruno is mixed with as I haven't a clue as to what his father was and his mother isn't telling anyone........

Quote:
![]() But seriously, as Katz has pointed out, the search feature requires four letters, so you cannot type in DNA, BSL, UTI and find anything! The only was I was able to track down my own thread on the update was thanks to my memory, which said that I had used the word "Asian" in my first post. Otherwise I would nto have been able to find it either! ![]() Anyway it is almost time for an "updated" update, since they promised me that they would re-run the sample this month...

There is an article in the most recent dog fancy , but I heard about this several months ago from The Whole-Dog Journal . I'll look up the service they covered . I found it to be exciting .

I worry about the information being collected and used for "other" fun things like BSL enforcement.
Maybe I'm being paranoid. Somewhere in Missouri a reporter leaked the names, addresses, and tele#’s of breed restricted owners. Talk about a Bulls-eye on your back. With BSL becoming more prevalent I am becoming more and more concerned with WHO knows what kind of dog I own. Again…maybe just being to paranoid? ![]() |
