Well it's been an eventful evening. Having to rush after work to make the hour+ drive down to the Humane Society to pick up my new dog. Surgery apparently was running late today, so all the animals were still in various stages of recovery - lots of anxious owners. It was a challenge getting Kiyashi into the car, he really didn't want to get in! (wondering if maybe he remembered his last car ride ended with a drop off at the animal shelter) This ride was short though, we stopped by my mother's house 10 minutes away and introduced him to mom's little dogs. We all went for a walk around the lake in the neighborhood. So far he seems very cooperative walking on the leash, he didn't try to chase the geese around the lake or go after the other various dogs out. I had been worried about if he'd think he was supposed to eat mom's dogs being that they are both small (peekapoos). Sassy, the smaller of the two actually snapped at him once when he got too close and he backed away from her.
Then it was back into the car for the drive home. (little easier this time) When we got here, one of the cats was downstairs. While Kiyashi seemed very curious about him, he didn't seem to want to chase him or anything. Tigger's even come up and rubbed up against him. Right now, he's lying on the floor looking quite relaxed. So far this is a great start! We'll see how it goes tomorrow and the rest of the week when he's recovered from being fixed. Thanks again to everyone with their wonderful advise about my decision to adopt him! -Selera |

He seems to be settling in nicely! I really can't imagine why this dog ended up at a shelter! They said he had no manners, but I really haven't had much trouble with him at all. We've had no potty accidents, no issue with him chasing the cats, He understands "Sit" and understands and listens to "No". He's obviously not a barker, hasn't once since he's been home. Guess I just don't understand the mentality of people who could get rid of animals. It's very upsetting to me to know he had been there for nearly 3 weeks. Hard to say home much longer they would have kept him for before putting him to sleep. I've talked with a couple of people who know of this shelter and they end up having to put a lot of animals down. At least one of the staff members seemed to be actively discouraging people from adopting him. She told me he was dog aggressive, which he's not (he backed down from my mom's peekapoo and the shelter's own evaluation form said he was good with dogs).
we're having small issues with crate training. He just doesn't like to go in or stay there. He's ok for a few hours or so, and then he starts whining and banging around. Last night was the first night we kept him in all night with no outside potty breaks. But all in all this is going leaps and bounds better then I ever expected it to! ![]() I think today we're headed down to Mom's for more walking and socializing. Perhaps find the dog park that is down there. Anyone have an idea how to get a dog that's this strong to stop pulling on the leash? I'm getting blisters on my hands walking him. I don't neccessarily like the idea of a choke collar, but if it's the best idea I'll try it. |

wow great news! im so happy things are going well for you two!
i know this may be hard if he is as strong as you say he is but the moment he starts to pull stop walking, or do an abrupt turn and walk in the opposite direction...but i have a feeling you might have an easier time just stopping all together lol. just stop and make him sit then continue on your walk...everytime he pulls just stop and sit, and so on and so forth! good luck!!
