Zircon came from Murphy, North Carolina so for a while I thought he might be one of these.

You kind of have to watch it with the pictures, since most have been submitted by people who think their dog might be a Carolina Dog. It almost looks like ANY dog can be a Carolina Dog! I emailed the gal back and forth about Zircon a few times, since he exhibits some of the traits (and came from the right geographic location). She told me that for now they are being generous with what they allow on the site since they are in the process of collecting as much information as possible.

The University of South Carolina is doing a geneology project to find out whether these dogs really can be called a "breed". If you click the links for "Banbury Cross" or "Swamp Fox Sanctuary" there are more dogs. Obviously there is nothing resembling a breed standard, but at least they know for sure who is related to whom.

I've always been convinced Zircon was part Akita (or Shiba Inu or similar types) & thought you were onto something with the Carolina dog when you mentioned that possibility too. Zircon is cuter than those Carolina dog photos though.

Zircon does look like he has Carolina Dog in him! They are such adorable dogs.
