Default Ever hear of an Elo?

This is a German breed of dog which originated in 1987 and has primarily the Eurasier, the Bobtail and the Chow-Chow as parent breeds.

The name is a shortened version of "Eloschaboro" and THAT name was taken by mixing up the letters from Eurasier, Bobtail and Chow-Chow.

The larger version dog stands about 20 " high and weighs approx. 60 lbs, the smaller one is 16" high and weighs approx. c26 lbs. They can have a smooth or wiry coat.

There's not much available in English (the wikipedia articel is very short) but there are some pictures on German websites that belong to the breed club and/or breeders.

If I understand the German pages correctly, there was an article about this breed in a major dog magazine three years ago, but the breed is not recognized by any major registry.

Hmm another designer dog. You can't call a cross bred a breed, it's like the goldendoodle, cross not breed.

interesting - looks like it's got a good ways to go before developing a consistent breed standard. If they've been working on it since '87 and truly working on getting consistent qualities then I would not call it just a cross-breed but I can see by the considerable variation that it isn't really a "breed" yet either. Something in between.

Some of them are quite appealing - some just look like odd little mutts to me. But ya gotta start somewhere I guess.

You're right... they all look really different don't they!

They're kinda cute, but I'm not overly keen on em.

Not sure if it is a designer breed or not. The English wikipedia site has very little:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_(dog)
There is a little bit more here:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/en...t=AbstractPlus
and the article was written by researchers at the College of Veterinary Science in Hannover.
And the folks who developed the breed have trademarked the name, which I find very strange.
I was hoping that maybe some of our friends from across the pond might have some first-hand knowledge.

So, what classifies a designer breed then? Because, from what I understood it was the cross breeding of dogs to kinda make a "made to order" dog. Wouldn't these fall under this catagory?
