In a nutshell, a "designer" dog is an F1 cross (technical term) between two different breeds. Take say a Beagle and a Cocker Spaniel and breed them, you are rolling the dice as to what the dog will look like. If you then take a Beagle/Cocker mix and breed it to another Beagle / Cocker mix, the offspring could look different from both parents.
A real "breed" will "breed true" that is, you take a male and female and they will look similar, and their offspring will also look like them. There is a bit more to it than that, but that is the essential part.

Yeah, so any dogs that have parents of a different breed are considered "designer" or "hybrid" dogs.

I actually just found a site that has recognised "hybrid" dogs... it's an American site. It's pretty interesting.

So this Elo would be a "hybrid" wouldn't it? Because it looks like it's not breeding true.

Wow, that's not how I'd define a "real breed" ... I'm going to leave tons of stuff out of the real definition (as I see it); however, my version goes more like this:

It takes lots of development & culling (by means of neuter/spay) unacceptable type & traits from foundation stock. Then, narrowing down the allowed outcrosses until finally dropping them from accepted use once a reasonable gene pool has been developed. Then, on to defining a breed standard & showing in a recognized major association in exhibition only status and working the way up the ladder to final acceptance (which involves a whole lotta work, documentation & details).

I'm over simplifying things to the Nth degree ... but I'd never describe development of a breed in simple terms even in comparison to that of "designer dog".

So... you're saying they breed out any undesirable traits to make what they consider a perfect specimen?

Let me add something to it to avoid confusion-this is a necessary but not a sufficient condition. I was trying to keep it very brief.

yep, people plannly play god to created what they dem as worthy and perfect,
however if a purebred breed, isnt perfect they breed it with another breed to fix the flaw.
