Does anybody here use their dogs for tracking/hunting?

I wish, I've been trying to get Diesel involved in hunting, but I can't as I can't find anyone to teach me and Diesel how to do it properly. And theres no Lurcher groups that I can find local to me. Is this about the coon hound?

Well...yes and no. I have been wanting to get my other dogs (beagles and basset hounds) into some sort of trails or courses.

Them being hunting breeds I figured it would be fun for them to be involved in these kinds of activities. But just like you I don't know anybody that hunts or anything.
And if I do get the Bluetick even more reason to get involved. 5 hounds.......yay!!

Contact your local lab clubs. They usually know some groups that train for tracking and hunting. Where I live I know we have 4 or 5 hunting clubs in a 10 mile radius. It is a lot of fun to watch those dogs work.

The Canadian Kennel club, member hound clubs, (Beagle, basset, etc) hold performance tests for hounds. Assuming they operate in the same manner as AKC, even an unregistered dog can enter the performance test as long as they're purebred and have a special registration number such as the AKC' PAL number. Your best bet would be to contact your closest breed club for more information.

Most hunting breed clubs are more than willing to share information with newcomers and will also invite them to attend their training sessions. If you find it's something you'd like to do, it would benefit you to join a club and help out at the events so you can get a look at the inner workings.

Be careful. Once you get into performance events, it can become addicting!

I know Snoopy and Squeeker would absloutely LOVE taking a tracking course. They are both very smart and very eager to please. I just don't know how these courses work. From what I was reading there are expectations and routines they must know/learn and so forth....that's what I know nothing about and would like to learn. But where do I start?

As for Hank, I would like to take the other 2 first, then apply what I learn with him. He has a shy or nervous nature (i'm not too sure which one). Strange people and loud noises scare him. So I figured learn with Snoopy and Squeeker first. Apply what I learn with Hank and maybe that will give him more confidence so he can participate in public as well in the future.

Jabroni would like it a lot too, but he is so human based that sometimes I wonder if he would want to be in that sort of thing. But I will enroll him as well as he has pleasently surprised me in many ways already.

Good luck with this Ivy. Let us know how it goes. It sounds very interesting. We got a beagle from the pound about 16 years ago and my husband used to take her hunting. They never went to any classes and didn't belong to any clubs but OH said she was a natural at it. I think joining a club or going to training sessions is a great idea. I think your right, Snoopy and Squeeker would love it.

I don't know much about clubs, but to keep Molly's brain going I make scent trails with food and hide stuff around the garden for her to 'find'.

Although on saturday I used a warm sausage off the BBQ, dragged it around the garden and hid it under a plant pot. I forgot to wash my hands before I let her out to find it, so she just ran up to me and sat at my feet barking. I wasn't sure whether to get frustrated or laugh my head off - I did smell of it after all!

It can be great fun and it's quite simple to get them started at home. I've been trying to teach Simba to track but it doesn't come naturally to her.

I'm so happy. I found a place that offers a basic tracking for dogs course that is not too far from me. Well, it's about an hour away but it's worth any drive for my boys and girl.

They offer a 10 week course for only $125.00.

I am so excited. The guy is going to e-mail me after the week-end to see how many spots are left open.

Snoopy and Squeeker are going to love it!!!
