Question Standard Poodle?

I have a standard poodle that I have started, but I'd like to take it seriously. I'll have goats eventually, and ducks. Probably not sheep. But possibly alpacas. Does anyone know of a real, working standard poodle who is put to real use on a real farm? Will I have to get a second dog for the real farm work? Or does it all depend of my particular dog? We haven't been to trial yet - still in training. I'm slower at learning than he is, for sure. As soon as I understand what my trainer wants, he does it. It's magic.

Welcome xodanio, great to have you join us! I grew up with poodles but not standard ones. I know poodles are very versatile and can make good herding dogs as well as being known for their retrieving abilities. Have you had a look at these sites:

xodanio, welcome to the forum! I'm so glad you joined the forum. Most people think poodles are foo foo dogs, and are only in the show ring. Back in the day, poodles actually had the purpose of a water retrieval dog. They make great hunting and herding dogs. Please post some pictures of your boy!

Welcome xodanio! Like Dee said, poodles were originally water retriever dogs hence the funny cut of the fur: left heavy where they needed more warmth.

Default Thanks!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

We have been herding for about a year, at this point - I was just looking for someone to commiserate with!

He's doing pretty well so far. I hope he'll do the work!
