Default Rabbit Dog Training Tips?

I have a Beagle and Beagle/Bassett Hound that I would love to train to Rabbit hunt. I am a little late considering one is 9 months and the other 7 months. Neither dog has really been around a rabbit so how would I start training?

I will be following this thread. My husband want to go rabbit hunting with Rascal. This isn't a good year for rabbits here.
Next time they go it will be with another hunter and his pack of beagles.

Hi At the ages you stated I woudn't have thought it was impossible to train for hunting rabbits, maybe one of our trainers can shed some more light on this!
Yes it always good to start training as soon as you possibly can but they are both still young

We don't even know if Rascal knows what a rabbit is
She wants to make friend with cats.

Firstly, since they're purebred, and they shouldn't be scared of loud noises, you'd probably want to check to see if they're scared of gunshots or not. That would make or break a hunting dog. I have a more "beagley" Pug/Beagle mix and he is terrified of loud noises like fireworks and thunder. I would assume the same would go for gun shots. Of course, I wouldn't be training a Puggle to hunt anyway, but that's beside the point.

Some Breeders tend to select looks above dog purpose, and some beagles now a days will have no interest in hunting or tracking whatsoever. I've seen really bad prey drive (my dog) to beagles that just want to play, so it does all depend on the dog. From what I have read overall Dual Champions really don't exist anymore (field and show), as the AKC really are starting to care more about looks than anything else.

My concern with your dogs would be age, from my understanding, people training gun or hunting dogs start out as early as 6 weeks, just developing certain skills and interests that the dogs have.

Granted, I do not know much about hunting dog training, but I've read some of the basics because originally my Dad wanted a Beagle for that when we were first looking for a dog. I can try to help you though. There should be some good articles around the internet somewhere.
