Default Does anyone have a Weimaraner

Does anyone here have a Weimaraner in their family or has anyone had one? I've been doing a lot of research for when Jay and I decide to get another dog and I think the Weimaraner is a very pretty dog. They seem to have a lovely personality too, from what I've read.

From my experience they are a very high energy dog, and need a job to do. They are a hunting dog, so not a easy dog to excersize. Being that they are hunting breed, they are bred to run all day. They bark quite a bit. Most of the weims I have met I personally don't like, but I have met a few that have really stole my heart.

I love the breed but they certainly are high energy & I agree with Flatcoat that they need a job to do. I had one when I was a kid & it was a great dog. He ran with us day & night & he had a few acres to run.

I've heard that some can be spooks and spazzy. But I suppose if you got from a breeder with good temperaments then it'd be okay. =]

I've seen many Weims come through the kennel and I say this hesistantly-a heck of a lot of them are spastic and kind of-dumb? I don't mean to say it like that, but they can be a little "off". Of course good breeding, raising, and training makes them good but a lot of them that I've been around are just strange. I've known quite a few that are chronic barkers, too.

Ah huh... well that settles that. It just goes to show that no matter how much research you do into a breed, unless you know someone who has experience with them you just don't know what you're getting.

Thanks guys!

I wouldn't write them off completely, maybe you could go visit with a breeder? A good reputable breeder would be more than happy for you to come check out the dogs and learn about the breed.

The breed just isn't my cup of tea-I'm not trying to discourage you, I only really know the dogs I met at the kennel.

Wink weims.

lizzy -

i have two weims. they are a wonderful breed for someone who has ALOT of time for them and is willing to work hard. ( i don't understand what your lifestyle is like ). i only work 3 1/2 days a week, so i have loads of time for them. they are extremely intelligent. not liking that they were called 'dumb or off'...

they are so headstrong, determined and stubborn at times. but once taught and trained, they are so eager to please. i think it taught me 5 minutes to teach my 10 week old to sit and give paw. he still does it... with no effort.

they are beautiful dogs, really. but they are work as far as temperment. i had never owned a dog before, and got a weim. boy, was i in for a shock.

but they are so special, all dogs are really, but i love my weims so much. their eyes are their best feature. they look so human. and they are such cute puppies. check our local weim rescue, if you have one. they are such great dogs, and adapt very easily. they can go from being very hyper ( and they are, they need LOTS of exercise ), to being a total couch potato. when i got in my car accident a few months ago and was laid up for a week, chevy never left my side. she only moved to eat and go to the potty. i have to have surgery in october, and i know i am going to have two hot water bottles to cuddle with.

they are a very wonderful breed. but they are not for everyone. they can't just be left in the yard, they get destructive. they suffer from separation anxiety. it is best to have them in pairs or have a playmate, as you do.

once they have found their 'nitch' in your family, you will wonder how you lived without one.

hope this helps.. keep us posted!

add note: they can be 'barky'. mine like to bark at me, and talk to me as i call it . it's rather cute. but it is very easy to get her to stop. a simple command of quiet, and she shuts up. lol.

Aww man, I knew I was gonna get in trouble for that one! I was trying to be tactful-it's just that working in a kennel environment, for some reason most of the weimeraners that came in there weren't the best behaved. Of course you get that in every breed but some of these dogs were downright wacko (think-defecating in the inside of their kennel and then spinning around in circles, flinging it everywhere while barking uncontrollably!). I haven't really worked with them outside of the kennel, so I can't really attest to that.
