Oh my God,do you really want me to go into this breed!.
My best description is:
I look like a golden or a Tibetan Mastiff but behave like a GSD.
Here is the address of the Hovawart Club of America:
http://www.hovawartclub.org/
This breed is dominant, most of all, toward it's on sex.
They need an owner that they respect or they will take advantage of you.
They behave like a golden but will keep anyone,at bay if not presented to them.
They are active,loving,stubborn and show-off.
They are big babies.
Even though, they are farm dogs, they would rather be,in the house.
They can be trained to do anything, you want. They are used as guide dogs, police dogs, farm dogs and herders.
They are excellent,at schtzshund, agility and obedience.
Males are lovers while the females are more independant.
They are very much a one person dog but will love the all family.
They love the snow and swimming.
Males don't do well with other males unless they know them since puppyhood
and females don't get along with females if they are both dominant. No one will give in to the other one and major fights will happen.
It's not a relaxing dog cos you have to be on the look out for anything that can go wrong.
They love to hunt and will take off,on you if they see a deer or something.
They need to be highly trained.
Next post will be pictures of my dogs!
hope you are not too bored!.

HEAVENS NO I am not bored- what a fascinating breed! The working ability of a working dog- the appearance close to a golden.. Amazing!
So- people usually just have one of them? How do they do with other breeds of dogs???

Many have more but it does happen that some don't get along. My Mom has 3 females but 2 can not be in contact with each other cos they fight. We just keep them, apart.the best to have,is a male and a female cos the male will give in to the female cos he just can't be bother.
It's a risk,you have with most breeds.

hmmm interesting.. Is it just within their breed that they do not get along? Tell us more.. Details how the dog does with your other, what type of training you did and starting when etc..
I am fascinated.. .. So they can be cart dogs etc.. Try working ability..

lol,

I thought I would add something interesting.

From the V. Stephanitz's book there is a geneological tree of the domestic dog from north eurasian territory....accroding to this 1924 chart the Hovawart was discovered about 7-800 years ago...a direct descendant of the bronze age dog and is direct ancestor of the early Doberman Pinscher and the GSD.

I just thought that was cool
