Default I need help choosing a good breed for me

I am going to be graduating highschool next year and going to University. I an wanting to take a dog with me, but I need a dog that will be fine alone from 4-8 hours. I will most probably be able to make it home for lunch and stuff. I just need some advice on finding the right breed.

Hi & welcome to the forum. Great to have you with us. You might want to consider rescuing an adult since you'll be away from extended hours.

About the breed choice ... what types of dogs appeal to you? Size, coat, temperament, activities, etc.

Well, I'm looking for a medium-small sized dog. I really like the look of the spitz and have been looking into the Keeshond, but I just want some options...I'm not really too picky on what the dog looks like. I like all dogs.

Hi and great on your decision to go to University. There are a few things you need to establish first, such as - will I go on placement and if I do how many hours will I be on placement, will I be required to stay away nights (sleep ins) - will I be required to go abroad or on field trips- can I take a dog with me - generally the answer is no. So you need someone to look after your pooch if any of the above applies.

Most halls of residence will not allow dogs - in the UK (generally) you are required to live in a hall of residence for the first year. You would find it difficult renting a flat/house/apartment with a dog - most landlords don't want students - let alone dogs!

You need to establish your time commitment - will you be able to commit the time to exercise etc., when your assignments are due in - when you've to spend hours and hours in the library researching (dogs are not allowed unless they are assistance dogs).

Hope the above helps

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and my Gang in Bonnie Scotland. Don't know how much research you have done into the Spitz but spitz breeds can be quite vocal so if you are aware of this and don't mind then that's fine, just thought I should bring it to your notice.

welcome!

I just wanted to double check something real quick because I know this was the case with most of the universities I applied to.

Have you checked with the schools you are going to whether or not freshmen are required to live in the dorms? I know at Virginia Tech they enforce that rule to the point that there is sometimes no place for the upperclassmen on campus to go. If so, you probably will not be allowed to have a pet (other than maybe a fish) with you, so you might want to double check that.

Which schools are you thinking about applying to?

Hope that helped

Totally agree- then you are past the puppy stages of chewing, housebreaking. Also you would one a breed that is not much of a barker or it will upset your neighbors that are studying.
