Hemset's starting to turn my dad around
My father's never been a dog person, and as a child he was mauled by the family dog - in many ways they make him very uncomfortable, especially in close or excited situations. The dog had been chewing a bone when my dad tried taking it away from him as a toddler, and got bit on the face several times until my grandfather shot it; not pleasant. It was mainly for this reason that he was not very keen on getting a dog, even if it was mine, but I managed to persuade him as he's an animal lover above all else and she was in a bad situation. He made it very clear that this dog was mine and he wanted nothing to do with it whatsoever. He's also always thought that dogs don't belong on furniture or beds, that dogs should be more proper and respectful.

But, as time went on, he started to soften up a bit. He started making excuses to visit me in my room when she was there, or wanting to take her with us when we went somewhere because he wanted her to "get out more" (despite me taking her out at least once daily, and to the park several times a week). Then he started buying turkey and salami from the deli, and it seems to disappear even though we don't eat sandwiches all that much. And the other night, I never thought in a million years this would happen!

My dad, the guy afraid of dogs who get into his space and thinks that they belong on the floor - asked me if she could sleep on his bed for the night! I absolutely could not believe it. Truth be told, she didn't really stay there, after circling and pacing for a while she eventually jumped off the bed and went looking for me. But, my dad wants to try it again and thinks that eventually she'll get used to sleeping without me around and be able to settle. I think it's absolutely awesome that he even considered it - when I first got Hemset, he refused even to hold her leash if I left the room for a moment to get something. And later, when he would get on the floor to play with her, he'd flinch away if she got too close to his face. Now he wants a wiggly dog walking all over his bed! :D

Things are going well, thanks for asking! My dad's been working a lot of overtime so he hasn't had much of an opportunity to have her on the bed again, but he's actually mentioned it several times which makes me think he really does want to try it more.

You are welcome!! That's a positive sign :)

Gah, we've tried a few times now but she just doesn't settle. She walks around in circles on the bed and the instant he moves even a little she licks his face. Any ideas to calm her down a bit?

Awww!!! Is your father accepting the licks as love? If he is then allow this bonding, How ever you could try a simple lie down or settle when she is on the bed and when she does lie down reward with verbal praise :) Thanks for the update!!
