Default How dog breeds have changed over the years

I imagine some of you have seen this before, but this collection fascinates me. It is a public album compiled by a PB user of how different dog breeds have changed over the years. Just choose a breed from the column on the left and click. You'll be taken to a series of photographs of the evolving traits of the breed.

That's really interesting and it has more breeds then I've seen before(where it shows how they've changed).

Yes, it's amazing to see how the breeds have changed over the years. I'm not going to comment any further. I have a real problem with breeding programs that have changed the look of dogs over the years.

I agree with you and I think before people defend certain dogs as working dogs that they need to have a look back at what the work was and what the dog doing it needed to look like.

Interesting. More interesting if I could see it better.

It is interesting, plus a little sad to see how breeds have changed. I think it also shows how we have changed as well. We've become more vain and lazy, the result? Instead of our dogs being bred for function they are bred for looks. Instead of dogs being bred to be mentally and physically able to do a job, they are bred for homes where they may or may not get out for a walk once a day. We also have more heart now, so dogs that aren't able to do the above where they would of been killed in the past are welcome into our homes. We spend time and money fixing health issues that they have, and some of them health issues are just seen as breed problems and may be bred from. In some ways dogs had it better back then, but they would not of been treated as kindly as many are now. Basically in every space in time dogs will have it bad in one way or another. And that I find really sad, but I do wish in some breeds particularly that we would aim more for the past type of their breed rather then the current.

Chaz, excellent post. We have done a dis-service to so many dogs because of breeding for looks instead of purpose. Of course in the US, there is not much need for purpose dogs. It's a lot different in the UK. We have ruined so many breeds....

You'll prolly find most the countries in the first world have played a part in ruining breeds. Too many people place their wants over dogs needs.
