Default Border Collie!

Yep, finally got one! Those who remember me here might remember that I've wanted one FOREVER.

So now I got one. And not just any border collie, one from working lines. The parents live on a 2000 acre farm. There's a herd of horses that most of the time, you can't even see because its so much land. And the breeder will send a couple out and say "Get the horses!" and 15 minutes later, the BC's are back with the horses.

Needless to say, I'm slightly terrified and not sure what I've just gotten myself into

For those who don't know me, don't be too disturbed by my post. I promise this has been thoroughly researched, I am aware that border collies are basically the smartest breed of dog out there and very high energy and I'm an experienced trainer.

But it's still a little unnerving to actually have one now since I've not been really involved in the dog training world for quite a while.

So how many others here own or have owned BC's? What sorta games did you play to burn off all that energy and keep them occupied?

Yup, they can be handfuls, but LOADS of fun! Basically just keep their minds on good tricks and behaviors and as much as possible don't allow the opportunity for the bad habits to form as much as possible... you know this already, but if they don't get a chance to do it over time they are less prone to try.

My border (and my pack of collies) get regular brain teaser puzzles, rally training, and agility training. In addition to spontaneous drills of silly pet tricks. I also taught via click how to ride a skateboard. We have sessions of fetch and tug, all sorts of games.

In the end, and once more I know you know this from before, it's all about clear initial boundaries! Once those are in place the sky is the limit with training possibilities. A friend of mine taught her Border a trick called 'feet'. When she says the command he places his back paws up on the wall and does a 'hand stand'. It took him 4 months to work it out. I plan on teaching Ash soon.

Enjoy your little genius!

I agree they're smart but the more I work with them, I think they are just super OCD! Lol!

Personally, I'd teach loads of tricks and loads of obedience. Physically exhausting one isn't going to happen, so keep them mentally engaged!

Oh, and Loads of pictures!

Just took a bunch, I'll have them up soon! And thanks =] I haven't quite named him yet, still contemplating that. He's 8 weeks.

Already figured out he's going to be a chewer so I went and got a couple different things. A puppy nylabone, rope toy and a rubber chewy ball thing. So far it seems he's a fan of the rope. Lots of redirecting to chewys because he wants to chew on EVERYTHING.

And so far no accidents! He goes out regularly and he potties like a good boy. It'll be interesting to see what sort of tricks I can teach him. That "foot" command sounds like a real kick to see Draco xD

Right now he's rolling on my bed and I'm trying to convince him to chew on his toys and not my pillows/blanket/leg/cords.

Beautiful pup you have there!!! I love the pics especaily the one where he is lying on the back end of your GSD/Alsation Just look at that face.! Iam sure he will do well training can start right now! Don't foregt the most important commands ( Life savers I call them!) are Sit,stay, leave it/don't touch, come here, lie down get these down to a 'T' and you won't go wrong! You can even use some NILIF ( Nothing in Life Is Free training too) And seeing as you are a trainer it should be realtively easy too! But there's always some one on here to help you too. Enjoy your
new puppy Good luck and keep us posted on any updates Please. ATB
