Default I think I have a shar pei?

We got this dog from the local animal control about a month ago. We were told she was a 2 year old chow chow mix, but after an online search I think she could be a bearcoat shar pei. As you can see, she has a little stub tail and a brown/gold brindle coat that is about an inch long. She is very smart and just the sweetest thing.

She is medium size, around 40 pounds. She gets along well with our other dog and has no real behavior issues. She learned her name in one day.

Right now, she is wearing a "lampshade" because she had a skin infection that she kept biting at. I understand shar pei have skin issues.

Does anyone here have experience with shar peis, and do you think she is all shar pei or not? It doesn't matter, I'm just curious. We love her regardless. Her name is Boom Boom!

I thought that too at first, but then I thought if she was mixed with Australian Shepherd wouldn't she have a pointier nose?

Doesn't look to be all shar pei, and as far as I am aware, they don't come in brindle. Definitely a cross (and much cuter IMHO), could possibly be pei in the mix though.

actually, CSPs do come in brindle. They also come in an interesting spotted color that looks a lot like a cattle dog pattern called "flowered Shar Pei". both are pure bred CSP. Not mixes. Boom-boom actually does look like some Bear Coats I've seen. And what little I've read, the two are sometimes confused (Bear Coats v. Chow chows). It seems a brindle cSP is more common than a brindle chow chow but a bear coat CSP is rare as well so...

this page has a picture (not a great one) of a bear coat CSP (slightly shorter coat than Boom-boom) that looks a good bit like your girl in terms of facial structure.

I have seen the flowered peis, but never a brindle - I stand corrected

Her face looks really Shar Pei. I've never seen a coated one, or a brindle one, but it's not my breed. I SURE don't see any Australian Shepherd in there! She's a very attractive dog.

Oh my gosh Boom Boom is just adorable!! I don't know breeds but she really does look like the picture of the bear coat in KCat's link.

I've seen some shar pei X retriever mixes and a lot of them keep the shorter snouts. I'm not sure if it's because the shar pei's snout is dominant or not, but then the dog tended to have a longer coat. That's my only experiance.

Besides that I don't really know much about Shar Pei coloring. But that tail does remind me of Australian Shepherd, and even if their were longer haired Shar Peis, is that much feathering on the legs normal?

Anyhow, what a CUTEY!

shar peis dont come in brindle.. I would say shar pei and aussie.... Maybe even tri breed.. shar peis looks are VERY geneticly dominant.. and anything fifty fifty is usually solid colored.. I have yet to see something 50/50 being anything but solid..

I have a shar pei rottie, and her sibblings in my country have multiplied.. so Ive seen second third and fourth generation.. I even found one of the lost sibblings due to shar pei mix puppies listed onlne...

so I would guess shar pei/aussie/something more... shes very very pretty

None of them brindle is pure breed, its easy to tell...

"
Color
Only solid colors and sable are acceptable and are to be judged on an equal basis. A solid color dog may have shading, primarily darker, down the back and on the ears. The shading must be variations of the same body color and may include darker hairs throughout the coat. The following colors are disqualifications: Albino; Not a solid color, i.e.: Brindle; Parti-colored; Spotted; Patterned in any combination of colors."

American Kennel Club - Chinese Shar-Pei

due to the shar pei's look being so dominant people sometimes belive some odd colored ones are pure but Ive never seen one papered so to say...

but none the less boom boom is a georgus dog... and I would def say aussie mix with shar pei but I am 99.9% sure there's something more in there due to the brindle
