I've watched several pbs and nat'l Geographic shows on dogs in the last year.
All dogs have been shown to have descended from wolves. A show I saw recently,(can't remember where), was about the multitude of dog breeds. No other animal has as much variety in size, shape, and temeperament. The first recognized 'breed' was the Saluki from egypt.
Its only been in the last one or two hundred years that we've gone to hundreds of breeds from tiny to huge with all kinds of shapes and temperaments.

Concerning those Russian foxes....Some have actually been introduced into and raised in Russian homes. They look different, they aren't aggressive to humans anyway, but they also can't be trained to behave like dogs. They'll go after any food around, don't come when called, etc. Maybe after some more generations they will but I doubt we'll soon be buying foxes at the pet store.
