Hi there, welcome to DF

Many of the things you've specified are mainly down to how you train or raise the puppy - have you owned a dog/raised a puppy before?

It might be worth going along to some puppy/dog training classes first and asking if you can sit in and watch, maybe meet some of the pups and different breeds there.

There are many breeds that can fit the bill (and crossbreeds). Going from personal experience, I grew up with spaniels and would highly recommend them as family dogs. They are in general playful, friendly and great with kids and ours all love the water.

Our current cocker spaniel, Molly, we have had from a puppy and she's brilliant. She was from a rescue centre.

There's a lot to think about really, selecting a reputable breeder is very important too. If you want a purebred, maybe go along to some shows and see what catches your eye, then talk to some breeders, meet the dogs, learn lots about them and then hopefully one will seem to 'fit' your lifestyle.

But whatever pup you take home, socialisation, training and patience is a must if you want the well balanced, well behaved pet at the end.

good luck!

I'am chillin' with forum thanks Bigboy and Sheplovr!

I've been fleeced by Draco!

Im agreeing with Mel and would probably say one of the smaller spaniels is a good choice for you and just cause you want it from puppy don't mean you can't take a rescue.

If you are from the USA or UK you usually have specific breed rescue groups that will get litters in from purebreeds that also needs rescuing. Just last night they pulled a litter of boxer pups in North Carolina Thank God cause they were due to euthanasia today. So you can actually do both, let us know in what area approx you live and we can likely give you a few links to any breed of your choice

and if you choose a breeder, take contact with the breed club that originates from your kennel club depending on what country you are in. They can usually guide you to a good and appropriate breeder who do all the prework and actually deserve to sell pups to good homes.

I really hope you stick around, cause I know we all want to see puppy pictures
and welcome to Dogforum I hope you will enjoy it here!
I love dogs cause they do not lie.

A miniature poodle would fit your family, as would a bichon frise (sp) or most poodle mixes. A papillon is a miniaturized spaniel and I've found them to be very nice, happy dogs. If you decide to go with a mix do not buy from a "breeder". Contact breed rescue and just say you would accept a mix of that breed, but you are unlikely to get a puppy (you might luck out).

Since you want a puppy, start doing research and find a really good breeder. This would be someone who tests for whatever problems the dog may have, such as CLAD (canine leukocyte adhesion deficiency) Von Willdebrand's disease, etc. You may or may not pay more for the puppy than one you would get from a puppy mill or back yard breeder. Never get a puppy from a pet store.

This post is five months old and the OP has not been back. I think we can safely assume that s/he has made a decision and is hopefully happy with it.
