Default Curse of the Curly Coat!

I blame the doodle craze...

Took Ash to the vet today strolling up the counter I approached a lady who was waiting for her Lab to get stitches removed in the back room. She looks down at Ash and admires him for a moment before asking a question that I had a hard time not blanching for, "Is he part Poodle?"

Somehow I kept my head about me and managed a bland expression as I replied, "No, he's a pure bred Border Collie from working stock. The curly is a lesser seen coat texture. His mother had the curly coat, and his father the sleek which is why his coat has the curly backridge and the sleeker sides."

Not too long after the receptionist checked Ash and I in cutting the conversation off and I was left pondering in the exam room why is heavens it seems that everytime a dog has a curly coat it seems the automatic conclusion is they must be part poodle! As if no other breed could possibly have curl in its coat.

"Who you callin' part poodle?!"

And if it's not a curly coat it's something else. Honestly so many people are SO BAD at identifying dog breeds it isn't funny. I remember a gal on a forum I used to be on who bred smooth collies posting about how a sales associate at PetSmart insisted that one of her dogs was a Pit Bull because of the long narrow snout.

Oh dear, no Ash doesn't look at all like a poodle!

Although, someone asked me today if Oscar was a boxer..

A boxer?! Good heavens, Oscar looks nothing like a boxer.

It is so amazing how off peoples guesses can be. Sadly, Ash and I were also standing in a PetSmart waiting for our Banfield vet appointment when the Lab lady made her remark. Hehehe, come to think of it I wonder what people would guess a Belgian Sheepdog is if they didn't now one when they saw it!

"Oh look, a solid black Lassie dog! Must be mixed with a Black Lab."

I get is that a wolf all the time with my Northern Inuits also what a nice husky. My brother was once genuinely asked if his Akita was a baby polar bear. I get fed up givIng the standard answer so I sometimes tell people they are 50kg standard dachsunds.

Haha! I love it, a bordoodle? A border doodle? A train wreck in any case...

A coworker of mine has an Irish Water Spaniel, which is very often confused with a standard poodle because of the coat, and she told me that when she used to show them, she knew of a fellow handler who trained her Irish water spaniel to play dead on the command "Would you rather be a poodle or a dead dog?" Maybe you should consider this for Ash...
