Default Thinking about getting a Vizsla

I know this is early discussion, but I am thinking about getting a Vizsla within 1-2 years. I am doing a great deal of research on this breed, but have yet to find anyone that has owned this great dog.

Does anyone out there in forum land have experience w/ Vizslas? Pros and cons? Any advice on what I should look for when checking out Mom and Dad?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Good for you for doing your research first!

I've never owned a Vizsla but have known many breeders, competitiors and their dogs over the years. Individuals that truly care about the breed.

There are some problems within the breed just as there are in most breeds today, so it's important that you find an experienced and ethical breeder. Sporting dogs aren't nearly as expensive as some other breeds simply because they usually have such large litters. But be careful as most BYB will ask as much for their pups as as an experienced and trustworthy breeder will, even though they rarely bother with the expense of health testing or proving their dogs.

It's important in the sporting breeds that both parents be OFA certified and in Vizsla's they should also be checking for Von Wilebrands disease; a bleeding disorder. There are some temperament problems that can crop up in the breed so you need to discuss this in depth with a breeder you can trust. Of all the sporting breeds, the Vizsla can be more of a velcro dog than most of the other breeds. They can also suffer from separation anxiety, shyness, and ocassionally irrational phobias such as a fear of storms.

A well bred, physically and mentally sound Vizsla makes a loving but energetic pet who is easy to train and well behaved in the home.

For more information on the Vizsla I suggest you look up the National rescue site. The national rescues have dealt with many dogs of the breed and provide excellent information on what to expect when living with a Vizsla. The National breed club would be another source for information.

Here are the links I found for you.

That is great your studying the breed, all breeds have problems, you must find a good line of health and success with the Breeders litters. References, etc.

I know a couple that have them and they are wonderful gorgeous dogs. Super temperments, it is all how they are raised like all breeds big, medium or small. Knowing about the breeds needs, and buying temperment first is a must with most larger dogs to handle them properly.

I have no problem with 8 high drive shepherds, it is hard work running them when out, the pups I imported are extremely high drive, but smart and sweet. Just keeps one of their toes until done working them.

I wish you the very best, research a good Breeder with much success of the pups she/he sells, how they turn out, etc. I think they are beautiful dogs, very regal looking. Have fun if you end up with one.....

Thank you both for the great advice. I have owned several dogs and I always make sure to research before jumping in.

I rather like vizslas too. Researching a breed is so important so you know what you're in for & what they were bred for.

I love this breed. I know quite a few people with one or two too. They are great dogs, great with kids and humans and other pets. Lovely looking, easy to train. Ideal in my opinion.
