Default AKC's 2008 breed rankings out

The AKC has released their breed rankings for 2008. I'm pleased to see the sheltie isn't in the top 10 and isn't rising fast. The poor Yorkie has taken a lrge rise in popularity, which we all know means puppy mills and BYB are going to be producing the popular pups to the breed's detriment.

May the sheltie never make the top 10.

Sigh - no chance for the poor Labby to give up first place, especially now that Yellow Labs are now not only the toilet paper dogs, they are now the "Marley and Me" dogs.

Phew! Border Collies are 53! Yay! May THEY never hit the top 10 and fall prey to the 'breeding frenzy' effect... and that same with Shelties.

Well the top five are great dogs, good with children, people, dogs, etc. Does not mean they are being bred to death for junk dogs.???? I would prefer a good rating if I was looking to buy one, but not in the US. NO way!! I am glad they are right up there with the Labs, great dogs for people to own as pets or working dogs to do it all.

Crap! #29 and been rising from past years. That will mean the rescues will be growing. They may look cute but...

It troubles me greatly to see the GSP moving up in popularity.

Though wonderful dogs in the right environment, they were never meant to be a pet without a job. BYB have multiplied like flies in my area. There are one or more young shorthairs dumped in local shelters every day. The most common reasons? Too much energy and/or too destructive.

I'm inclined to agree - I adopted Macey not knowing what a GSP was - I found out quickly & was not willing to give up on her! It was tough - but we see tons of GSPs for being "too high energy". *sigh* Duh! One gal had tied her GSP to a plastic dog house in her basement - surrendered him as he kept draging it around the basement & getting loose.

Greyhounds...129th place. That's what we will be left with when all the tracks are shutdown.
