Default The oldest breed of dog?

Hello,
A little while ago I found out from somewhere (cant remember where now) that the Saluki is the oldest breed of dog? Is this true does anyone know?
Just having a wondering moment.

I think the answer is....maybe.

The Saluki is certainly considered one of the ancient breeds.

The tibetan mastiff is also meant to be a fairly old breed I think?

The Pharaoh Hound originated in ancient Egypt. It is thought to have been brought from Egypt by the Phoenicians when they settled on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo. The Pharaoh Hounds have existed there for over 2,000 years. In Malta they are bred for rabbit hunting and are the national dog of Malta....The Pharaoh Hound is one of the oldest domesticated dogs in recorded history.
Well, it certainly is 'one' of the oldest existing breeds, War. The same here, I had always thought it was too!

It appears that the "Pharaoh Hound" of today may not be the same as the ancient Pharaoh Hound of Egypt.

Quote:
One possible surprise for owners of a dog known as the pharaoh hound is that, despite the dog's resemblance to an ancient breed featured on Egyptian tombs, the study indicates it is actually a fairly modern dog that just happens to resemble a breed now likely extinct.

Interesting... the article is from 2004 and yet the AKC still displays the ancient line. That is very intriguing!

There are a number of ancient breeds, or breeds descended from ancient lines in the Middle East and Central Asia. Because the breeds are constantly manipulated by breeding programs, I'd venture to say that it is unlikely that any modern breeds have an unblemished direct lineage to ancient times. Greyhounds are called an ancient breed, but were crossed with English Bull Terriers in the 18th century. Ibizan, Pharoah, Saluki, Azawakh, Sloughi, Greyhounds, Galgos, and Afghan hounds all share close common ancestry, but as modern breeds are divergent.

I think the most ancient breed is the mutt, with lines going back as long as there have been canines.
