Default Sad Situation At Festival

Went to the local Renaissance Festival today, had a great time there! And even had the amusement of watching some Border Collies do a herding demonstration which was great fun... they had a real young'un who was a bundle of nerves, a newer trainee who was extremely eager but not very controllable yet, a mid aged female who had admitted issues with focus, and two older dogs who ran the sheep fairly well. That was the awesome part!

So, what's the sad part? Went back into the petting zoo area where they had the dogs to get a better look at them and what was in a pen nearby? Three Border Collie pups for sale. And two of them were missing fur in patches. I felt my heart sink, and wanted to snatch them up, but KNEW better! Of the five adults he had, who knows who the parents were. And while his stock was alright, they weren't that impressive. The pups would be too high energy for the average household (by the behaviors of all the adults), but they would likely not make particularly good true working dogs, after all he only had two with good focus and they were both male. It made me so sad to see this, similar to what has been discussed elsewhere, this man touted that his stock were 'registered' Border Collies like that set the standard. But what was on that field was sub-par when it can to form and function.

My husband standing beside me told me we couldn't take another dog at the moment, as we were walking away I whispered to him that I didn't want one of those pups anyway, they looked badly bred. That, and the situation was not a good one to purchase a dog at. <sigh> Another BYB out for big bucks.

That is seriously sad. We run up on BYB's all the time at the local flee market. It makes my heart sink to see how the pups look, and everything.

That is so sad. Animal welfare should get involved if the puppies were missing fur etc.

It was tough to tell through the fence, but at a glance it looked like it might have been a form a mange. I just hope for those pups sake it wasn't, and they by some miracle are healthy. It just made me sad because it was obvious they were trying to attract compulsive buyers. Puppies, as we all know, need to be really planned out to bring into a household. A Border Collie is certainly not a breed to bring home on a whim ... not that any dog really is!

Oh boy do I ever know where you are coming from. 3 years ago I was visiting my sister who lives 3 hours away because our mother was up from Georgia (I live in Ohio). We went to a flea market and here was a guy with a bunch of older standard poodle pups in a horse trailer. They were filthy, undocked, two were very stunted. Believe me, it took everything I had to walk away and I even now still wonder if I did the right thing.

We have to remember that if we let our hearts win in this kind of situation then we are just giving this person a reason to breed again. I know the next person might buy that pup without knowing what they are getting into, but we as lovers of the breed can not allow ourselves to personally contributing to the problem. The one exception to this rule is the rescue or dog pound dog because they are not directly padding the pockets of the breeder and in my area, must be altered thus not contributing to the problem.
