Default Finding the Perfect Breed

I am looking for a breed/ list of breeds with as many of the following personality traits as possible:
  • independent
  • quick learner
  • fairly laid back
  • will tolerate kids
  • doesn't want to kill every small animal it sees
  • on the shorter end of the height spectrum
Thanks ^^

Have you tried a breed selector? A lot of the dog breed websites have a breed selector. Pet planet has one, but there are others. You answer a series of questions related to desired personality, grooming, exercise, cost etc and it suggests breeds to suit.

A spaniel - any one really, springer, cocker, field - they are all smaller.

i would have said cocker spaniel too, but the first thing on your list is independance and cockers are deffinatly people doggies and can suffer from seperation anixety. but they doo fit your other 'wants' quite well
