Default Pit Bulls?

I would just like to ask what people's views are on Pit Bulls (I know thats not their real name but its easier than writing out all three ) and the ban on them?

Funny you should ask that, I've just been reading an article in a very notorious tabloid, look at the representation of the dogs in it...

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...cle1309601.ece

I'm enraged by it, the debate section has people calling for all dogs to be PTS and at best all large dogs banned.

As for my view on pitbulls, I've expressed it elsewhere. As i'm in the UK, I don't get to see 'good' examples of pitbulls, the only people that breed them tend to be people after a status symbol and as such the worst examples are often bred, producing specimens of poor temperament and type. No respectable breeder is able to improve the type because they are illegal, so our streets are full of poorly bred and irresponsibly owned pitbull types.

Having seen some of the pits on here owned by our US counterparts I have to say that I think they are stunning dogs and I would love to meet one of these.

I know and love staffordshire bull terriers, my OH's mum has one that I regularly look after and she's an absolute darling. If pits are anything like her then they can only be good in my opinion.

Bad owner makes a bad dog, not the other way around. I fully believe that banning them has made them more of a danger on our streets.

I might catch some flack, but you asked for opinions so here's mine.

The problem with pit bulls is that while many people are working on breeding dogs with a better dog friendly temperment, there are just as many who are breeding for the exact opposite temperment. So while your dog is running around the dog park, which breeder did that pit bull coming through the gate, come from? This is why pits are banned from so many otherwise dog friendly places. And while dog fighting is such a huge problem, this attitude will continue because we, the general public, have no way of knowing where that pit came from.

Now with tha being said. I know and have known a few pits, Chewie even has a pit puppy playmate. And so far I have had nothing but good experiences with pits. But I won't lie in that I'm still nervous around them because I wonder if the play gets too rough, how far is the pit going to take it, it sure can do a whole lot more damage to my dog than my dog can do to it.

K, hit me with your best shot, that's just MHO.

Barbiespoodle, I know what you're saying. It's kind of my point about not being able to judge pits from the UK as we only come across ones illegally (and as such badly) bred.

I love staffies, but I admit to being nervy when I see a loose one when I'm walking my two. You don't know what that one is like and my two wouldn't stand a chance if they were nasty.

Just the other day, two staffs ganged up on my collie, I don't think they were trying to hurt her, just play...but play ROUGH. She was petrified and ran as fast as she could, tail between legs just to get away. I had to scream at the owners of these staffies to control them as my poor dog was terrified and shaking in my arms. I had to pick her up to get her away and the staffs were jumping up and snapping at her.

When I look after Shabba the staffy, I'm very aware that she might scare some people so I make a point of putting her on a lead to go past people and dogs. I don't think she'd hurt them but she does look intimidating.

The best owners are those that are aware of the presence their dogs can have and control them accordingly.

I know!!! I was browsing the internet and came across it.

If you're feeling brave...look at their discussion forum on 'should devil dogs be banned' - I can't believe such idiots exist!

I take solace in the fact that most of the people that regularly participate in the sun's discussions are not likely to be future leaders and policy-makers of the country!!

No, i agree that i would be slightly wary around them as they are thinking dogs, they are constantly thinking of the best way and time to make their attack, if they are going to attack. They have their own minds, which is why they are used for fighting.
I believe that banning them was a very wrong thing to do as now the only pits that are on our streets are illegal ones, that have been bred for fighting, which is very sad. I work at a dog kennels and we get dogs from a rescue centre come to us for rehoming and we had a Pit Bull called Fred in, who was with us for a 18 months, which is terribly sad. Dont get me wrong, we had interest in him, as we was a very good looking dog and if i didnt already have two american bulldogs and a bull mastiff i would of had him. But the sad thing was that when people found out he was neutered, they were instantly put off, proving that they were only after him to breed from. Fortunately, a family friend of ours loves the breed and has the intelligence not to flaunt him about and risk getting reported, so he has finally homed him.
Recently, Im not sure if you heard the story but around my area, a family was prosecuted as they were found out to be illegally breeding pit bulls. They had been excercising them on treadmills in their basement and a pile of dead dogs was found, that were obviously the poor puppies that wernt violent enough to fight to kill, so had been killed themselves. It makes me so mad that people could do that to dogs and i think it is disgusting that a breed can be banned. These sort of dogs, big dogs really, are only discriminated against because they are stronger than other dogs. Jack Russels or other terriers can be just as nasty, or even nastier but they are ignored because they cannot do any lasting damage. Also, i believe that the nature of a dog is caused by its upbringing. Obviously the breeding does come into it somewhere but mainly, it is they way an animal is treated when they are young that makes them nasty. I had a staffordshire bull terrier that was soft as muck, she never ever hurt anybody throughout her whole life and was so gentle. In fact, when I was a baby, I used to sit on the back of my mums pit bull and hold onto her ears and she loved it. She was ever so gentle. Im sorry Ive wrote an essay but i feel so strongly about the subject and i get in a rant .
I would love to hear everyones views

I was in town yesterday and there was a staff with harness on running lose. the owner was there but didn't have the dog on a lead. He was going in shops levering the dog outside. It looked like a lovely dog but there were mums with small kids trying to get past it. I think the owner should have kept it on a lead so people who don't like dogs wont be afraid
I love pits and staff type dogs but not the owners they seem to attract. Most in this country are teen boys who get a staff as they think it makes them look hard. The dogs deserve better
