Default Can Anyone Please Help - two Matings

We Bred one of our Famales as a one off breeding we bred her on Saturday with a georgus male everything went smoothly until on Monday my Male Bulldog got hold of her completly unexpectantly it just took a second for me to look away and they were looked.

My vet said there is a possiblity the pups can have two dads but he isn't sure what the pups will look like can the pups be born with the planned breeding dad and than have some pups with unplaned mating or will it not make a difference 2nd mating because the 1st mating was done 2 days before our male got hold of her. I know its difficult to answer but maybe someone has been through a similar situation

please help

Hi,

Unfortunately in a litter each puppy could technically have a different dad if the bitch has been mated more than once. Especially when it's only within a couple of days like yours are you may find that you have a litter of mixed puppies. A bitch has a number of eggs and they don't all have to be fertilised at the same time to take.

The only way to tell will be when the pups are born and probably when they are grown to full size.

I know of a bulldog that was gotten to by a bullmastiff, nobody could tell until the puppies grew a lot bigger than they were meant to - meaning a lot of purchasers who'd paid big money for a purebred bulldog were not too happy!

No problem, your dogs are gorgeous by the way! Which one is going to have puppies?

Hi there, If a dog has a successful mating alot of people think that is it,but the bitch is still very much in season and should be kept away from all other male dogs. That is why some breeders decide to do matings 24-48 hrs later. Good luck.

Actually, there is something you can do when the pups are born. Get a DNA test on the males and female and then DNA test the puppies. Breeders are doing this more and more often. The DNA test will tell you which pups belong to which dad. I believe the American Kennel Club even accepts this in their registration.

Sorry this happened when you were looking forward to a nice litter from a well planned breeding.

The pups will not be a complete mixture of all three. There is only one father for each pup. Assuming that you're planning to sell these pups as AKC registered, you'll need to do the DNA testing for your own protection. Or sell them without registration.

If you don't have them tested and a crossbreed is accidentally registered, you could lose your privilege to register any dogs for the next ten years and face a huge fine. Any other dogs registered by you would lose their registration too.

You'll also need to notify the owner of the stud dog. They could lose their privileges too if they sign the litter registration.

The information you need can be found on the AKC web site under Registration. http://www.akc.org/reg/index.cfm
