Default I can't choose: Afghan Hound or American Cocker Spaniel?

I am looking to buy a show quality dog. I have two breeds in mind but can't choose as I like them both.
I like Afghan Hounds and American Cocker Spaniel.
What do you think?
I can't find a breeder in the uk of the Afghan.
Love
Amy

Maybe if you say how you got to those two breeds and what is important to you it would be easier to offer an opinion?

I wanted a dog with a coat that requires alot of grooming as I really enjoy it. I would also like one that has a good temperement and will enjoy a really active lifestyle.
I love showing and would like to take that a step further. I know that alot of breeds fit these categories but we need at least a medium size dog as our rescue dog is large and plays very enthusiastically to say the least.
My partner likes Afghans and I would like an American Cocker Spaniel as we can't have both at the moment we need to make a decision.

The last time I saw an Afghan was in one-hundred and one dalmatians, when Pongo is looking out the window at the start. They're so rare, Ive never seen one in real life! I have absolutely nothing of interest to add, just when you get a puppy/dog Im hoping to see lots of pictures :P !

well if you like them equal, then think of other stuff.. example do you want a dog that is easy to train, or a bit more independent? if you want a more trainable dog Id say the cocker, from what I have heard and seen the afghan is a bit more independent..

I've seen lots of Afgans. They are sight hounds, and as Monkey has said, very independent. Afgan owners describe their personalities as very cat-like. They are not very trainable. I know one that does agility with a very talented trainer. Even with him, the dog usually chooses it's own course.

Some have called the Afgan stupid because it doesn't respond well to training, but those who own them tend to say they're very intelligent...they just don't much care what you think.

If you want a more biddable dog, the American Cocker is your choice. They are bubbly, fun and energetic. You do want to get one from a good breeder as they can be aggressive if poorly bred. I personally prefer the English Cocker to the American Cocker, but that's just my preference. The American Cocker also has a reputation for not being too bright, but I don't feel that's true with a well-bred dog. I know many outstanding Cockers who are sweet, fairly intelligent and full of life.

Before you get an Afgan or Cocker, make sure to read a lot about them. Especially the Afgan might be a bit of a srprise.

I have heard that Afghan hounds are difficult to train but the other half really likes them.
I would have already bought a American Cocker but as I have already said that we lost our English Cocker and was not sure so I thought I would wait.
I am leaning towards a Cocker at the moment and then maybe a Afghan later when I have finished my course.
But I will post some as soon as I get one.
Love
Amy

what about a Borzi. I like them better than the Afghan. I think a cocker would be better though as they are smaller and easyer to transport to shows

I'd get an american cocker, the puppies dont come much cuter
Afgans are supposed to be aloof and very difficult to train.
