Default Funniest Experiences with Mistaken Identity

You would think with Dobermans people would generally know what they are.....Right? LOL not likely!!! This morning I took Peanut with me to the feed store and there was a young couple there. The weren't far from me when I heard the woman go "Oh look honey its a chocolate lab" . Peanut was the only dog in the entire place lol. No granted Peanut is a red Dobe with natural ears. But I mean come on there is a HUGE difference in the body and head type in the dogs. It did make me giggle to myself for sure .

Now with Silver it has been asked a bunch of time if she is part Weim or a "new" gray and tan Weim . Though I do understand that you don't commonly see Blue Dobes as much as Red or Blacks. The orange on her snout also starts to fade closer to her nose. And I guess if she does have a big prominent band she must be a mix lol. I actually once felt like I was talking to a brick wall with one woman. I was Hiking with Silver and Tawnee and we came across a woman walking a Lab. She called Silver a pretty tri colored Weim. And I politely told her that no Silver is a purebred Doberman she just has natural ears and her markings airn't perfect. Well she took offense to that and told me she KNEW Weims and she KNEW Dobes and she was no Dobe. When I rattled off my family history and everything I knew about Dobes she just huffed and walked away .

I usually get approached my people asking me where I got a spotless Dalmation when it comes to Torque . Or im asked if he's a Dalmation mix. But he definately isn't he's a purebred white Dobe with natural ears. Usually when I tell people he is stone deaf they say "Oh then he MUST have Dalmation" in him lol. I usually just tell them in a friendly way that no he is probley the product of white on white breeding. Oh once I was asked if he was a natural eared white Pharaoh Hound!

Raisin and Blade are usually never mistaken for other breeds. They both have cropped ears and are my Black and Tan twins. So I would say yes most people atleast in the states think that if the dogs ears airn't cropped than its not a purebred Doberman or a Doberman at all! Occasionally the plain old breed confused have called Raisin and Blade Rottweilers!! That gave me a good chuckle.

Tawnee being a Sibe gets the sterotypical wolf or coyote called out to her on occasion. And of course sometimes I get chewed out for owning a wild animal .

Sky my English Bull Terrier has never been mistaken for any other breeds. People usually ask what his breed is or they call him Spuds Mckenzie or "The Target Dog" .

So tell me your funny stories!!!

Lol, I quite frequently have people tell me that my rough collie is a sheltie - despite the fact that shelties are meant to be really quite tiny, and my rough is small, granted, but still border collie size and 19 inches tall at the shoulder. It makes me laugh how people like to tell you what your dog is - because clearly we don't know what it is we're taking home! We used to get a lot of weird comments about our pyrenean mountain dogs, a lot of people thought they were albino st bernards

The best one happened when someone asked if my liver and white springer spaniel was a basset hound!

My old dobe in sweden never got mistaken, however, my old rednose got mistaken for a pig once on a distance.

However, Tasha my rott/shar pei mix, has been taken for Dog de bordoux, Fila braziliero, pitbull, boxer.... DESPITE those ears are a dead give away (tiny tiny shar pei ears on an ENOURMUS head) *lol*

people seem to have a problem telling Labradors and Golden Retrievers apart, it drives me mad when people ask if Max is a Lab

Mya, the Brittany frequently gets called a Springer Spaniel. My mom has a longer nose, flat coated Pom that people think is a large Chihuahua... but my BEST story comes from when I was a kid and was walking my moms Sheltie runt, Royal. She was very small fullgrown and cute as a button... a couple of boys walking by jumped back about four feet and shrieked, "FOX!" and they weren't playing, they actually ran off in fear thinking I was walking a fox. Royal had upright ears but she was a rich sable coat with WHITE socks, not black. A far cry from a fox. But it still gives me giggles to this day.

Frequently I get people asking how Ashenpaw got his curly coat, someone even told me he HAD to be part poodle... ummmm, his parents were 1 sleek coated Border and 1 curly coat Border... thus his funky mixed coat. I love that about him. He has nice texture.

Aww Ashenpaw does have a great coat .

People don't usually mistake the Cattle Dogs for any other breeds. They are all pretty easy to identify . Though occasionally people get confused and called them Australian Shepherds not Australian Cattle Dogs lol.

The most guesses I get are for Quiver. Who is a purebred working bred BC who you can see in my signature. People often insist she is mixed with Husky because she has striking blue eyes and upright ears. The other guess I often get is Australian Shepherd because of her blue eyes. And once I had a woman insist she was part Cattle Dog because of her freckles on her legs!!! Lol because you know Border Collies can't have spots, blue eyes, or upright ears.

Don't you know the only purebred Border Collies look exactly like the ones in Babe?

Ash has brown/deep reddish highlights on his legs and belly, looks like he's been dipped in chocolate... Hey, that must mean he's part chocolate lab!

Every one always calls Lucy a puppy because she has short legs, even though her muzzle has a lot of white in it!

With Coda I had one couple ask me if she was a dane. Her ears are not cropped and I don't think they knew to much about dogs. When Coda was a puupy a lady asked me were I got my rotti. I told she was a purebred Dobie and she then went on to argue with me. I finaly just turned my back on her and tried to walk away but the lady would keep following telling me she was a rotti. It wasn't until I was rude to her that she left me alone.

I've had a lot of incorrect identities on my dogs. I'd have to say you can't argue with know it alls. Some of the reasonings of why a dog is or isn't a certain breed is beyond me. So only Dalmatians are deaf, better let all these other breeds know so they can stop producing deaf dogs.

Most often my Cane Corso has been mistaken for a Pit (or Pit mix) or Weimaraner.

My Boxer I was told was a Pit Bull. I was lying that she was a Boxer, why else would she have a docked tail. Never mine that a docked tail is against the APBT breed standard.

I think the "funniest" was when a guy thought my Pit was a Shar Pei. He asked if my boy was a Shar Pei, I said no he's a Pit Bull. He said are you sure? Is he mixed with Shar Pei? No he isn't. I was getting annoyed with him, as I told him the dog was pure bred, registered, not any Shar Pei or whatever. He said "I've never seen a Pit like that" His wife was kind of getting embarrassed. She kind of grabbed him and said it looks like a Pit to me. He said Well I've never seen one like that before. She said well I have. Guess he's never seen a show quality APBT, so what, many people haven't, regardless they don't look like Shar Peis. This male I finished very quickly and he placed 1st nearly every show. Yeah looked nothing like a Shar Pei. I just can't believe how people want to argue or insist on what breed your own dog is.

I suppose that goes both ways though, because I've seen mutts that people thought were pure, they are convinced their dog is pure bred when there is no way it is. This happened to one of my family members then they finally realized the dog was at least crossed.
