However, Alan Beck, director of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Center of the Human-Animal Bond, favors letting the breed go into extinction.

“This breed alone is a risk of serious public health factors,” Beck said. “We are keeping them alive against their own best interests.”

Beck said while he does not advocate taking dogs from current and caring owners, he does feel that it has become more of a social and political issue for people than a health one.

“This breed itself is not natural.”
OMG Alan.... you have a PhD?

lilpantz, having a PhD is not a guarantee of intelligence.

Cripes did you see this?

No one interviewed for the article felt pit bulls should be chained.
Where did THAT come from? Did the author write the article assuming that chaining a dog is some kind of measure against aggression?

affraid i have to agree with this man...sorry. i know that alot of people say blame the owner not the dog when horrific attacks, even the killing of children, by these dogs take place...but it always does seem to be THESE types of dogs...never hear of labradors etc doing it...unfortunatly i think its in their genetic make-up.

There is some question as to why there are not as many reports of attacks by other breeds, including the possibility that there is a media bias. But it is not that hard to find reports of bites by dogs that are not pits. Here is a fresh one for a Labrador mix:

Family devastated by girl's death

Ellie was found bleeding to death in the living room

Floral tributes

The family of a five-year-old girl killed by her uncle's dog say they are "absolutely devastated" by her death.
Ellie Lawrenson died of severe head and neck injuries after being mauled at her grandmother's house in St Helens. Ellie's family, who described her as "little angel", laid flowers outside the house on Tuesday night. Post-mortem tests showed the dog was a pit bull terrier-type breed, prohibited by the Dangerous Dogs Act. Two previous complaints had been made about the pet.

Pit bulls seized in dog-fight ring raid

POLICE have seized 14 pit bull terriers as part of a raid on a suspected dog-fighting training area.
The move comes a week after the death of five-year-old Ellie Lawrenson, who was mauled by a pit bull while at her grandmother's home in St Helens.
The 14 dogs were found on Saturday on an industrial site in the Norris Green area of Liverpool.

A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy was attacked by three rottweiler dogs that followed him into his home, police said yesterday.
The boy's father had to prise open the jaws of the one of the dogs during the attack in Newcastle-under-Lyme Staffordshire.
