Default The deal with these breeds?

So I think I might have an interesting topic. What does everyone think of those... "off" breeds? You know what I mean-Cur Dogs (Black Mouth Cur, Mountain Cur, etc), Blue Lacys, maybe Carolina Dogs, even Catahoulas. Are these breeds able to even be called real breeds? I've seen so many people call their dogs these breeds (especially like Black Mouth Cur and Catahoula) when it's very possible they are shepherd mixes or Aussie/lab or something. There are registries for all these breeds but not major ones that seem to keep close records. I do believe Catahoulas are in the foundation stock thing in the AKC, which is a good step, but not completely. I wonder how much of these breeds are actually...those breeds. The blue lacy dogs remind me of beagle x dobie x weimeraner. I suppose thats how breeds get started, but it just seems a little odd to me. What do you think?

Even though a specific breed may be recognized in local areas as a legitimate breed it would be impossible to prove parentage and purity without thorough and carefully kept records. To oversimplify, no records, can't be proven to be purebred.

The locals would argue this till they're blue in the face though!

By clicking on this link http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/newbreeds.htm you'll find a brief explanation of what it takes to have a breed recognized by a legitimate registry.

We don't have those dogs in Aus so don't know anything about them. I know here we have the minitature foxie later called Tenterfield Terrier. Not all dog breeders think of them as a real breed.

Haha, isn't that true! I know what you mean, I've just had people argue with me that their dog is a "Purebred Black Mouth Cur", and I just kind of laugh at them. I haven't met any of these blue lacys yet but I'm sure I will.

A purebred is in the eyes of those who place a definition on the word. Most people aren't as discriminating, I suppose. I call those breeds natural adaptations of the available free-roaming population even if humans came along to breed like kind together.

Catahoulas are in the FSS program of the AKC:
http://www.dogforum.org/showthread.php?t=9533
I can't say too much about all those "curs," but owing to the fact that for a time I thought Zircon might be a Carolina Dog I read up on them a bit.

http://www.dogforum.org/showthread.php?t=11424
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_Dog
It is not clear whether this is really a breed or not, but they are the subject of study at a University near where they were found. They are currently recognized by the UKC and the group that is interested in promoting them has applied for inclusion in the AKC FSS program, for whatever that is worth.
