Default How could we find another of this unique mixture of breeds?

Hi, my wife and I are very sad. Moses, our one and half year old Labrador / Newfoundland mix died this past weekend in an accident at the family farm - we live in Minneapolis. He was so beautiful and had a great temperament. Also, he had the best balance between being full of energy (his first 15 minutes at the doggy park were spent in a dead sprint) and being able to mellow out when indoors. He weighed 90 pounds.

We got Moses at the Humane Society as a 9 week old and never looked back. Come next spring after some more grieving, I think we might be ready for another puppy, but my question is this: would anyone know how we could find a Lab/Newfie mix? This isn't a commonly bred hybrid. We do know that both parents were purebred - the puppies were an unwanted litter between two neighbors, which resulted in these incredible dogs. He was sweet-natured like the newfoundland, but also had the outgoing rascal-ness of a labrador. He was easy to train like a lab, and would never be more than two steps from me outside like a newfie. In short, he was the best of both worlds. If anyone has any advice, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I hope you like it here!
I am sorry about Moses!
But also remember, even getting the same mix of breeds doesn't mean the dog will be like Moses.
You can never really..replace them.
I am sure there are a lot of other great dogs in the shelters

Good luck!!

Moses was a beauty! Sooo Adorable!!

I'm sorry for your loss of such great dog and companion. You'll never find another one exactly like him, but you will have other wonderful dogs in your life.

I know you'll have other wonderful dogs, because it's obvious that Moses wasn't such a great dog only because of his breeding. The way he was brought up by you and wife would have had much more impact on who he was than the mixing of breeds.

I'm sure no expert but I have spent a considerable amount of time studying and observing canine genetics. Even a repeat breeding of Moses parents wouldn't be likely to produce another dog exactly like Moses. When mixing breeds there are far too many variables to consider to expect the same result twice with crossbreeding in the first generation.

When the time comes, you'll find the right dog without having to search for or encourage cross breeding. If you're determined to find another lab/newfie cross, try the newfie rescue, I'll bet they have them from time to time.

Good luck on your search but please bear in mind; it's more about how you raised him that made him such a great companion than it was about the mixed breeding.

Sorry about Moses....he sounded like a great dog. You can search Petfinder.com for Newfie's and I am sure you will come across one mixed with a lab.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your wonderful Moses. I have to agree with Applesmom as I also doubt that the breed mix had much to do with your dog's temperament but was more a result of his loving home & training he received from you.

I do hope you find another dog to share your life. Good luck in your search.

Teehehehe, a lamb (Aw, you edited it Jan! I'm going to keep this here though coz I thought it was cute)

I've gotta agree with everyone here. It is not likely you will find another pup just like your Moses. Each dog has their own temperament. I have two dogs of the same cross and they are COMPLETELY different!

I am very sorry for your loss. I hope that when you are ready you do find another doggie that fills your heart just as much as Moses did.

You can join this listing..

And take a look at all the Newf rescues within a few states of you-if you find the right dog, you may be willing to drive some to go get it! A lot of times these rescues will meet halfway or bring the dog to you for a homecheck, so keep that in mind. Good luck!

Hi spkd49 and welcome to the forum!
I know how you feel. I have a one of a kind and I know I will miss him sorely when he is gone. But the others are right-even if you did find another Lab/Newfie mix (and both breeds do have great personalities) chances are that that dog would not be exactly the same as Moses. Heck even purebreds don't always have exactly the same personalities.
It sounds to me like you loved Moses very much and he knew it. Maybe the time is not right for you to find another dog? They say you can never replace the dog that is still in your heart, you can only make your heart a little bigger so there is room for another dog.
Your dog is out there and surely you will find him. And even if he is not quite like Moses it sounds like you will find a lot to love about him /her.
Good luck!

Default Thanks

Thanks for everyone's note. We definitely don't want to replace him, but did love a lot of things about him. It definitely makes us feel good when you say that Moses' likeable traits were more from upbringing than genetics. I'm sure some of it was nature, not nurture, but not likely duplicable. We're still very sad, but we know our next dog will find us when the time is right.

Thanks

So sorry to learn of your great loss. Moses was very handsome and obviously a special dog.

Just like you found Moses in the shelter, you will find another special dog to fill the void in your heart. Of course, there will never be another Moses.

My advice to you, when you're ready for another pup, visit the local shelter. Visit it several times - possibly once a week since they are constantly getting new arrivals. You will find another dog that will steal you heart, I promise. It's happened to me 3 times!
