Default Small dog breeds?

Hi everyone,
My sister was looking to get a new dog. She was looking to get a small to medium sized dog. She has a three year old son and she wanted one who wouldn't be aggressive towards him. She also wanted a dog that has a low maintenance. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

Hmm...three breeds come to mind, Boston Terrier, Papillon, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Low maintence as in...little excercise, or little coat grooming, or...?

Pugs are a laid back breed that are sturdy enough to put up with kids and they are low maintenance

Yeah, I think a Pug might be a good choice. Or what about a French Bulldog?

When my daughter was 2 years old I got my first min LH Dachshund, i had been searching for a suitable breed and when I visited my cousin who had twin girls then aged five they had a mini LH Dachshund and it was so good with the children that I did a little more research on the breed and I got one. It was great with my daughter and they grew up together, so I would recommend this. They are little fdogs who think they are big dogs and are not fragile little lap dogs in any way. I would also say that no matter what breed you decide on the little boy has to be taught to respect the puppy and vice versa. Good luck

How about a shelter dog? You can always find great, loving dogs there that will fit all your requirements.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Great to have you with us. Some of the "sturdier" small breeds that I think would be good growing up with a small child who is likely to roughhouse with the pup are:

Beagle, Brittany, Cairn Terrier, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Cocker Spaniel, Norfolk Terrier, Nowich Terrier, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Shetland Sheepdog, West Highland Terrier
