I've heard of them. I think they are sooo cute. However, I'm not sure I'd consider them their very own breed. That's not a bad thing! I don't lose any respect or love for them in any way. I see them more as a sub-breed though, know what I mean? Like with Poodles. You have Standards, then minis then toys. And Schauzers too, as well as other breeds. But this is all just my opinion.

There are Jack Russell Terrier's a Parson's Terriers, same dog different sizes. There are Minature Poodles and Standard Poodles, same breed different size. So yes they are considered a breed but they are the same breed as the ACD just smaller. There are so many breeds like that.

As for breed standards, I would have to look but I do not believe they seperate them ( AKC ) but they may at the UKC.

They are not a breed. They are a fad, a type of designer dog.

They are just aussies, specifically bred for the smaller size. They are not recognized and do not fall within the breed standard.

Quote:
Size, Proportion, Substance
Size--The preferred height for males is 20-23 inches, females 18-21 inches. Quality is not to be sacrificed in favor of size.
Unfortunatly, when breeders begin breeding specifically for size they inevitably scarifice quality.

Not so sure about designer dog label, they are in my opinion just a shrunk down version of a ACD. If they do not fit standard but are still registered then they still are a ACD, just not the same as the breed standard size, smaller.

I do agree that they should not be shrinking them, they are bred with a purpose in mind and need the size to be able to perform that purpose.

Designer dogs to me are crossbreeds like a Cockapoo, shihpoo, goldendoodle, labradoodle etc etc.

JMO.
