Thumbs down Inbreeding dogs for "fads" in Japan

Wow. If you think we are bad in the US about wanting to rush out and buy whatever animal is in the latest Disney moviem take a look at what goes on in Japan. This is a good example of the dangers of extreme inbreeding to get a fad trait that will sell dogs.

Quote:
TOKYO: Care for a Chihuahua with a blue hue? How about a teacup poodle so tiny it will fit into a purse the canine equivalent of a bonsai? The Japanese sure do.

Rare and unique dogs are highly prized here and can set buyers back more than 1 million, or about $8,400. But the problem is what often arrives in the same litter: genetically defective sister and brother puppies born with missing paws or faces lacking eyes and a nose.
...
In the early 1990s, a television drama featuring a Siberian husky helped send annual sales rocketing from just a few hundred dogs to 60,000 and then back down again when the fad cooled, according to the Japan Kennel Club. The breed took off despite being too large for most cramped homes in Japan.

It's come full circle and is happening all over the world, what was once considered to be pets have now become nothing more than a commodity. Charge outrageous prices for the viable products and throw away the rejects.

The welfare of dogs and the integrity of breeders was better when only the aristocrats could afford them or dogs were only owned and used for a specific purpose such as hunting or herding.

It seems that turning them into household pets over the years was the worst thing that could have happened for millions and millions of unfortunate dogs.

Disgusting.I hate how dogs are "fads" now! It makes me sick when I see all these women carrying around chihuahuas dressed up,because of Paris Hilton!

that is just sickening, if people would just open their eyes and do just a tiny bit of research, this would not be such a huge problem.

I agree with the Paris Hiltons of the world and their dogs. They are just toys to them and what happens when they find a new "toy"?

Poor little things, and they don't need dressing up... AARRGGHHH dogs already have a coat!!

This is terrible but its the truth of the world. This is happening all over the world now-a-days. I know a lady that lives here in my town that inbreeds Chihuahuas as well. She has been called on plenty of times but nothing ever happens, its terrible.
